Celebrating World Day for Cultural Diversity! 🌍 On this special day, it is important to recognize the significant role that diversity plays in fostering mutual respect, collaboration, and innovation in the maritime industry. According to our "On the Pulse of Seafarers" survey, there is a positive trend: more than 92% of seafarers are happy working in culturally diverse crews. To mark this occasion, we are sharing a video featuring personal reflections from our seafarers. Diversity isn’t just about bringing together various cultures; it's about creating spaces where everyone can thrive together. #culturaldiversity #worlddayforculturalciversity #maritimeindustry #diversityandinclusion

Today marks the beginning of South Asian Heritage Month. I hope to see more employers and employees across various sectors celebrate South Asian history and culture. What is South Asian Heritage Month? The month was established to honour and celebrate South Asian history and culture. It is an opportunity for everyone to appreciate the countries in South Asia and learn new things about their heritage. When is South Asian Heritage Month? South Asian Heritage Month runs every year from 18th July – 17th August, ending on the anniversary of Partition. When did South Asian Heritage Month start? The first South Asian Heritage Month event was conceptualised and launched by the South Asian community in the UK in July 2019 at the House of Commons. The Grand Trunk Project, The Partition Commemoration Campaign, City Sikhs, and Faiths Forum for London worked together to establish the initiative. Why is South Asian Heritage Month important? Along with providing learning opportunities for others, the month enables people of South Asian heritage to reclaim their history and identity by sharing their own stories and experiences. What does it mean to people of South Asian heritage? South Asian Heritage Month is a relatively new concept but a very welcome one for those of us with South Asian heritage to reconcile what this means for us. It takes me back to my childhood. Growing up in the UK and a child of immigrant parents, my story echoes so many others of South Asian descent. The idea of not really belonging was never a foreign concept and being stuck in dual identities was (and in many ways continues to be), the normal state of existing. The constant, unspoken need to oscillate between my born into British culture and my South Asian roots was how I subconsciously navigated my life. South Asian Heritage Month for me is a beautiful path into reclaiming and reconciling all parts of who I am.

🌎Today is World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development! Quite a mouthful, huh? Just like this special day, this is a complex issue we need to address to achieve world peace and sustainable development. And that's where ‘dialogue’ comes in. Aotearoa New Zealand is home to a wide range of cultural identities, from how we present ourselves to how we speak and our whakapapa. Talk about intersectionality! 🇱🇰🇳🇿🏳️🌈 This acknowledgement was born when UNESCO adopted the Universal Declaration of Cultural Diversity, which has about 12 articles. I see three articles as crucial for decision-makers to embrace: 👥 From cultural diversity to cultural pluralism - in other words, understanding and embracing intersectionality. ⛓️💥Towards access for all to cultural diversity - honoring Te Tiriti o Waitangi and ensuring that everyone can express their culture without trampling on others. 🤝Building partnerships between the public sector, private sector, and civil society - enough said. So, my challenge to whoever is reading this is to have a kōrero over a cuppa with someone who doesn't look like you this week. Share stories and memories. We are all shaped by our lived experiences, and it's crucial that we begin our understanding of Cultural diversity from there. 🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽 #diversityandinclusion #culturalnclusion #UNESCO #conversation #partnerships #tangatiriti #equity #belonging #workforce #peopleandorganisation #peopleandculture

On World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, let's focus on building trust and understanding. In Aotearoa New Zealand, we should support and embrace diverse cultural identities by practising allyship and actively pursuing what it means for us, regardless of the cause we lead. 🌏🤝 Article 9 of the UNESCO Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity highlights the importance of organisations and Crown bodies refocusing their cultural policies to promote creativity. This means designing fair policies and initiatives that encourage the exchange of ideas and work, while also supporting cultural industries to thrive both locally and globally. Implementation can include providing support or implementing necessary regulations. In Aotearoa, we all have a responsibility to define our own cultural policy, taking into account our international obligations. By fostering creativity at a policy level, we can unlock untapped creative potential that will uplift communities in all aspects of their lives, within their hāpori (communities), whānau (families), and mahi (workplaces). #equityandbelonging #inclusionanddiversity #allyship

Who else knew it was South Asian Heritage Month? I didn't until the folk at Together Equal asked me to chair a panel. And as usual, when things come out of the blue, there were delightful, unexpected, surprises 📖 The theme was storytelling. And given that South Asia is made up of 8 countries, what a wide array of stories were told at the event. Given my job is to spot good stories, the thing that struck me the most was how so many faced adversity, but came out stronger for it. We hear that so many times on LinkedIn, but when the story is so personal and is about family and migration and racism, it feels more emotional 😀 It also struck me how positive the storytellers were. This was not a big moan about all the wrongs. Instead it was positive stories that showed how heritage and rich culture brings with it many benefits And how Britain has in the main welcomed and encouraged sharing of diverse backgrounds. 🤎 A difficult and very unexpected outcome was the audience. It wasn't quite as diverse as I had hoped. Lots of happy BAME faces of course. but few from other backgrounds. It made me think about the need to encourage Allies and not get swept up in an echo chamber when tackling topics around D&I So watch this space. I may have almost missed South Asian Heritage Month, but I do have plans (with Together Equal and the amazing @Sarah Aird-Mash) to do more to encourage diversity, empathy and equity through powerful stories! #diversity #diversityandinclusion #southasianheritagemonth #storytelling Liked this post? WORLD DAY FOR CULTURAL DIVERSITY FOR DIALOGUE AND DEVELOPMENT 2024 In 2001, UNESCO adopted the Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity. In December 2022, the UN General Assembly, in its resolution 57/249, declared May 21 to be the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development. What Day Is National Diversity Day? Every year on May 21st, the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development urges everyone to do their part to bridge the gap between cultures. The day is often referred to as Diversity. Why Is World Diversity Day Celebrated? 2022 marks the end of the International Decade for the Rapprochement of Cultures, which seeks to promote mutual understanding and reciprocal knowledge of cultural, ethnic, linguistic and religious diversity. How Do We Celebrate World Cultural Diversity Day? Listen to traditional music from a different culture. Have a traditional or cultural dress day at work. Enjoy or share home-cooked food from a different culture. Attend a different traditional or cultural engagement. What Are The 4 Types Of Diversity? There are generally four different types of diversity: internal, external, organizational, and worldview—and you should aim to understand and represent them all. Keep reading to learn more about each one and how diversity affects the workplace. 1. Support sustainable systems of governance for culture. 2. Achieve a balanced flow of cultural goods and services and increase mobility of artists and cultural professionals. 3. Integrate culture in sustainable development frameworks. 4. Promote human rights and fundamental freedoms. Why Is It Important To Celebrate Cultures? Cultural celebrations foster respect and open-mindedness for other cultures. Celebrating our differences, as well as our common interests, helps unite and educate us. To understand other's perspectives, to broaden our own, and to fully experience and educate ourselves.
