Great Architecture for All! David Baker Architects have beautifully demonstrated this with their latest project, Blue Oak Landing, transforming the public housing narrative in a breathtaking way. Typically, public housing projects are simplified to functional, minimal designs, often resembling nothing more than concrete boxes. However, Blue Oak Landing breaks away from this mold by: 1) Elevating Aesthetics with Modular Construction: The building's cladding not only leverages modular construction for efficiency but also enhances the structure’s visual appeal with weathered steel, adding a touch of elegance and durability. 2) Smart Orientation for Natural Ventilation: The thoughtful orientation of the units maximizes natural airflow, significantly improving indoor air quality and comfort for its residents. 3) Energy Efficiency: Aimed at achieving zero energy status, the project exemplifies how design and functionality can converge to create environmentally sustainable living spaces. It’s refreshing to see such attention to detail in multifamily residential projects and even more so in affordable housing. Congratulations to DBA for setting a new standard in public housing design! Can we do this again? https://loom.ly/8K6f0iU #architecture #design #publichousing

The project has two clear lessons for governments everywhere, writes Alex Bozikovic: Renovation can be a powerful strategy, and hiring the right designers is crucial. #architecture #building #libraries
"The project has two clear lessons for governments everywhere: Renovation can be a powerful strategy, and hiring the right designers is crucial." My piece on an excellent Toronto Public Library renovation by LGA Architectural Partners. I have to note, though, that this is a good result from a bad system. The architects are badly paid and the City of Toronto seemed ready to demolish a significant public building.

Let’s celebrate architecture by debunking the longest held misconceptions around the profession. These misconceptions have led many people to often misunderstand the field, here are some of those: Architects, -Only Design buildings -Work with large-scale projects -Are expensive -Are not required for simple projects -Only work with new buildings Those misconceptions are misleading and here is why: An architect’s work goes beyond designing structures, and could be responsible for site analysis, project management, engineering or interior design.Aside from that, the architect closely involves themselves in the construction process to monitor the building process and confirm it goes according to plan, thereby involving working closely with engineers, contractors and other construction experts. Architects do not only work on new buildings, they also assist with complete renovation, and restoration of older buildings. This work may involve blending the historic elements of a building with modern functionality of that era. One of the envious talents of an architect is evaluating the condition of an existing building and determining what should be done to restore it back to glory and splendor. Are you one of those who assume architects work on larger than life projects, large commercial buildings, residential flats or exquisite homes? These professionals have the flexibility to take on small-scale projects. You could get incredible professional insight about materials, layouts, functionality and aesthetic design when bringing your small-scale vision to life through the eyes of an architect. It’s true, architects are expensive but they can work within a range of budgets. Remember also an architect could help you save money by designing an energy-efficient building with reduced utility costs. These professionals are also good with making smart decisions about construction methods and materials that don’t require unnecessary repairs, hence saving money. Architects are not only necessary for a complex project, their expertise could be valuable for anything from designing the layout of your dog’s kernel to redesigning your kitchen and making it more functional, efficient and aesthetic. An architect, dear friend, is one of the most eligible persons for improving quality of life in a commercial or residential building. #architecture #architecturaldesign

Protecting a building from harsh weather conditions is an important factor many architects consider when designing a building. Rainscreens are designed to protect the exterior façade of a building, making them an ideal design element. Each building has its own unique set of needs so there isn't a one-size-fits-all solution that fits each project. Although there are several types of rainscreens, the most common types are pressure-equalized rainscreens and drained and back-ventilated rainscreens. Read our blog to learn more about rainscreens and these two types: https://hubs.la/Q02j8RwW0 #rainscreens #rainscreenfacade #rainscreencladding #constructionindustry #exteriorarchitecture #exteriordesign #panels #sustainabledesign #architecture #architects #architectureanddesign #designers
