#Journalism in the U.S., and perhaps globally, is constantly shifting and continues to experience layoffs of all sorts. No matter the season, it's important to highlight and honor journalism that makes us challenge, smile, appreciate, and make changes. I'm working with the Washington, D.C. Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists to promote their annual Dateline awards. Journalists in the Washington, D.C. (DMV) area are encouraged to submit their best clips in print, broadcast and digital journalism in nearly 60 categories – from breaking news and features to commentary, blogs and photography. You can see a full list of divisions and categories on the SPJDC website at https://lnkd.in/eGBmqkwN. ***Submission deadline is March 3, 2024. The awards dinner will be in June 2024 at the National Press Club, seen below at last year's event. Democracy thrives in a well-informed populace, and journalism provides a key means through which people are informed. As someone who has worked in journalism, I'm sad for those who lost their jobs at the L.A. Times. It's a complex set of reasons why newsrooms are struggling, including a loss of advertising revenue switching from print to digital editions. But finding solutions to bolster bringing important stories to localities and their people is essential. Understanding what is happening in our neighborhoods, communities, cities, nations, and world makes us more informed citizens to build up a better humanity. https://lnkd.in/epxJjBzC

One of the aspects of The Business News I often get questions on is our decision to not have a paywall for our news content. This section of my recent discussion with Seaway Printing as part of their Leadership Series shares the perspective we've taken at the newspaper and the philosophical drivers behind it. Thank you again to Seaway Printing for taking the time to speak with me and explore a little bit more about what The Business News has to offer for the communities we serve in Wisconsin. #leadership #journalism #business #businessnews #strategy

While the method the might be considered 'outdated' in the modern world, the work that newspaper journalists (and all journalists) do each and every day remains vital to our democracy! Journalists CANNOT do this important work without your support! Consider subscribing to your local news outlets (digitally or print) or making monthly donations to non profit news outlets in your area! #SupportLocalJournalism #PressFreedom #Subscribe
"The U.S. has lost more than 130 newspapers — or 2.5 a week — this year, according to the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. Since 2005, the country has lost nearly 2,900 newspapers and 43,000 journalists." https://lnkd.in/eFsJDn7s
