“It’s stellar to watch a true partnership between an academic institution like the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, IITM Research Park, and the companies here. This academia-industry-startup partnership is phenomenal to watch in action. I am excited by their potential in the future, especially in green tech-focused companies,” said Dr. Sethuraman Panchanathan, Director of the US National Science Foundation (NSF), after visiting the IITM Research Park. The Research Park was honored to provide Dr. Panchanathan with an overview of the IITM Incubation Cell and the startups working here, including AgniKul Cosmos, a startup making significant strides in #spacetechnology. He was also briefed on the research by the Centre of Battery Engineering and Electric Vehicles (C-BEEV) in the areas of electric vehicles and battery storage. His visit culminated with an extensive overview of the sustainable initiatives, innovation, and research happening on the #IITMRP campus. #greentechnology #batterytechnology #greenbuildings #innovation #research #startups https://lnkd.in/gBYgUtyK

Despite the substantial investments in BSOs (Big Science Organisations) and their importance in scientific and technological advancements, there is limited understanding of their unique roles in fostering innovation, facilitating knowledge spillover, and enhancing human capital development in industry. Erika Dietrichson's PhD project "Innovation impact of big science organisations - Conditions, interactions, and knowledge spillover" aims to address the knowledge gap described above. In connection with her forthcoming defence of her PhD project, Erika has given us a sneak peak of her findings and how they can impact future studies and policies. “By highlighting the unique capabilities and impacts of BSOs, this research paves the way for future studies and policies that further integrate these organizations into national and international innovation strategies. It proposes that enhancing collaborations with BSOs could significantly contribute to advancing global scientific capabilities, industrial innovation, and economic development, suggesting a shift in how we perceive and utilize these powerhouses of innovation and research within the broader knowledge economy”. Explore more 👇 On Monday 24 June 2024, Erika will defend her PhD project 🍀 Details are included in the link below. Is Denmark closer to getting our own ‘Kendall Square’? Yes! Denmark has a lot to offer within the quantum and life science sectors. We have plenty of great educational institutions, hospitals, and research centers, many of which are clustered here at Nørrebro, Copenhagen where BioInnovation Institute is also located. However, to become one of the top innovation hubs in the world - which is indeed possible - we must still foster an environment that can facilitate dynamic collaborations between the important players. Now we might be one step closer. Today, Københavns Kommune, University of Copenhagen (Københavns Universitet) and the Danish Government launched a new collaboration with the aim to create a new ‘Innovation District Copenhagen’ for life science and quantum technologies. I had the pleasure of showing the delegation around the potential new ‘Innovation District Copenhagen as well as the facilities of BioInnovation Institute together with David Dreyer Lassen from Copenhagen University. It was also my pleasure to showcase two of our startups – Ampa Medical and QunaSys – two good examples of how we can innovate good research and ideas that will benefit all of us in the future. Danish companies and research from the universities within life science and quantum technology have the skills to devise and deliver solutions to several of the world’s challenges, and at BII we and our startups are already well underway. Since 2018, BII has supported over 100 startups which together have raised 4.2 billion Danish kroner, created more than 600 jobs and attracted international talent and investments to Denmark. But if life science is to be a position of strength that Denmark can live off of in the future, it requires even more collaborations across universities, educational institutions, hospitals, and industry. I am enthusiastic about the commitment of Copenhagen Municipality, University of Copenhagen and the Danish Government to work together on further strengthening the life science and quantum ecosystem located here at the heart of Copenhagen. With our joint efforts, Innovation District Copenhagen can indeed become the European equivalent of Kendall Square. I can't wait to get started with fulfilling the great ambitions outlined today. Published new data that shows Oxford ranked third most intensive science and innovation cluster in the world. This is part of my annual Global Innovation Index (GII - https://lnkd.in/g8EDvft) a pulse check on the state of innovation, to be published in full next week. I’m proud of the role the University, including our School, has played in this result, through our exceptional research and our thriving innovation ecosystem. In today’s age of breakneck technological advances and significant environmental challenges, the GII has never been more important. Over the last 16 years it has helped to shape the innovation policies and agenda in many countries, and this year will be no exception. Entrepreneurship and academic life may at first glance seem like contrasting worlds that are difficult to unite. However, they can actually complement each other, especially in the realms of applied and health-related sciences. While scientists working on fundamental natural science challenges may strive to have their work immortalized in textbooks or even earn them a Nobel Prize one day, our primary focus is on creating a substantial and immediate impact on society. This could involve pioneering a novel cure for an incurable disease or introducing cutting-edge products that have the potential to transform people's lives. I recently had the opportunity to discuss this intricate balance between entrepreneurship and academia in an interview with Ghita Nidam Møller for Science Report.
