Can any of my actuarial or mathematician geeky type friends validate that: “Tens of Millions” is correct - Calling Bullshit (Again) Citing my mates at Google “tens of millions” is a phrase used to mention something huge in number. It could be any number above 10 million & below 100 million Currently 26+ Million in Oz In 2021, there were 315,705 babies born to 311,360 mothers in Australia. Let’s say work on 200k per year for the last 100 years and we get tens of millions of babies not boat people As of 2023, Australia's net overseas migration was 152.2 thousand people. In the 50s Agreements were reached with Britain, some European countries and with the International Refugee Organisation to encourage migrants, including displaced persons from war-torn Europe. By 1950, almost 200,000 people had arrived We would have to have this same number each and every year to get 2 million per decade ( and we didn’t ) them every decade for 7 decades gets us to 14 million - I guess if that were true ( but its just sensational maths ) Few of Craig’s teams own stats below Happy to be corrected as I was really bad at Maths ( Year 10 was the best five years of my life !) https://lnkd.in/gt3ryznT

Signing ‘The Foster Family’ on the Welcome Wall at the National Maritime Museum, which celebrates the tens of millions of Australians who arrived in Australia, mostly by boat. My family came in the early 1800’s. By boat. And yet we attack, demonise and exclude others who do so. People have a right to seek safety and we need to acknowledge our responsibility to show the world how they should be welcomed.

What do Native American Heritage Month, Mesoamerican Indigenous Communities in the US, and Dia de los Muertos have in common? November is National Native American Heritage Month, celebrating the traditions and cultures of Native American, Alaskan Native, Native Hawaiian, and affiliated Island communities. Dia de Muertos, also known as the Day of the Dead, is celebrated on November 1st and 2nd and is a vibrant Mesoamerican cultural practice in the US, Mexico, and Latin America. It involves decorating graves, building elaborate altars, and enjoying traditional foods to remember/honor/respect loved ones who have passed away. Unfortunately, the Mesoamerican indigenous communities in the United States are frequently underrepresented. The historical marginalization and discrimination of these communities are some of the reasons for this. For centuries, many Mesoamerican indigenous peoples have suffered from colonialism, oppression, and enforced assimilation, which has resulted in their cultures being erased and suppressed and forced removal from their ancestral homelands. Consequently, they have limited visibility and representation in mainstream social structures within Latin America and the US. Mesoamerican indigenous communities pertain to a diverse range of indigenous groups that are indigenous to the Mesoamerican region, which comprises present-day Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica. The Mesoamerican indigenous groups, such as the Maya, the Olmec, the Aztec, The Mixtec, amongst others, possess a unique cultural heritage characterized by distinct traditions, languages, and customs. Furthermore, socio-economic factors, language barriers, and limited access to education and resources have also contributed to the under-representation of Mesoamerican indigenous communities in the US. We believe that being #welcoming is much more than being friendly, tolerant, or peaceful. To be truly welcoming, a community needs intentional, inclusive policies, practices, and norms that enable all residents to live, thrive, and contribute fully. #welcomingweek2023 is one of the tools that can help us achieve this vision. Being part of the #ConnectorProgram is another tool! Being a #Connector, helping connect #newcomers to the community, the labour market, and their industry can be such an important piece of creating a welcoming community. As a #Connectee, you can find so much information about your new community, and begin to feel like it is home. Check out more about #WelcomingWeek2023 at the link! We're thrilled to share that our latest Dual Narrative Tour, set in Northern Ireland, is ready for take-off for 2024 dates. Northern Ireland’s deep history of conflict is still an active act of reconciliation. This tour provides travelers with a unique Dual Narrative perspective, seen from both sides of the conflict, with Catholic and Protestant tour guides sharing their community's stories and their own personal histories. Mejdi Tours co-founder Aziz Abu Sarah says it best - "What we’ve seen is that the Dual Narrative is so powerful because it gives you the opportunity to not only hear different opinions, but also to understand the people you meet, to understand their fear and their anger, and to really fall in love with the place you’re visiting." With much of the world seemingly in continuous conflict, this type of #sociallyconscioustravel - where the focus is on the human element of destinations; the diversity of its people, their stories and narratives - needs to not just stand out as an outlier, but become the norm. #traveltrade #travelandtourism #responsibletravel Learn more about the tour ⤵

Honoring Courage and Sacrifice: The Celebration of Philippine National Heroes Day In the heart of the Philippines, a nation rich in history and valor, one day stands out as a time to remember and celebrate the individuals who have shaped the destiny of the archipelago. Philippine National Heroes Day, observed on the last Monday of August, is a poignant reminder of the courage, sacrifice, and unwavering love for the country that defines the character of its national heroes. Philippine National Heroes Day is not just a historical observance; it is a unifying force that brings together the diverse cultural and regional communities that make up the Philippines. It serves as a reminder that the struggles faced by the heroes were not confined to a specific area but affected the entire nation. The celebration transcends geographical boundaries, fostering a sense of camaraderie and shared responsibility among Filipinos. In a world where historical narratives can sometimes be forgotten or overshadowed, the observance of Philippine National Heroes Day serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by those who paved the way for the nation's prosperity. It is a day to honor their legacy by fostering unity, encouraging civic participation, and inspiring the next generation to carry the torch of heroism forward.

Throwback to February 2021, a moment where tradition met transformation. At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Trinidad and Tobago's government canceled Carnival, an event deeply ingrained in our cultural fabric. But it was precisely because of this void that I felt compelled to take to the streets, garbed as the iconic Dame Lorraine, a character that has echoed through our history. Despite the absence of the official festivities, I couldn't let the essence of Carnival fade away. Armed with a Bluetooth speaker and masked for safety, I marched alone, my sign reading 'Still Not Asking For It'. This was more than a display; it was a poignant social commentary on the state of women’s rights in TT, particularly in light of Andrea Bharath's tragic passing. The idea behind this personal project was inspired by Marshall McLuhan’s concept: 'The Medium is the Message'. When conveying a potent message, the form it takes can be as impactful as the content itself. In choosing Dame Lorraine, a figure that was ‘prohibited’ at the time, I tapped into a medium that would resonate deeply with my community. The response was overwhelming. Neighbors and friends appreciated the innovation, and the message struck a chord. This wasn't just about keeping the spirit of Carnival alive; it was about using a silenced medium to amplify a crucial issue. As I reflect, I can't help but feel proud of this independent endeavor. I had waited for the perfect moment to combine tradition and advocacy, and the universe gave me an unforgettable canvas. Sometimes, the most poignant messages arise when they're least expected but most needed. #ThrowbackThursday #OleMas #DameLorraine #SocialCommentary #TheMediumIsTheMessage #Carnival2021 #TrinidadandTobago #COVID19 #WomensRights #MarshallMcLuhan
