What a great two days at ReThink HK 2023, catching up with friends and partners and connecting with new ones! Thank you for the event organizers for creating this space for business sustainability and fostering the growing community. The common thread from all the amazing discussions seems to be: start somewhere, start now, don't worry about figuring everything out right away, perfection is not expected in sustainability but honest transparency is. Knowing where to invest, and which innovations will serve and attract consumers is key to category growth. A great weekend of exciting exchanges that started with Friday dinner with Charles Wang (SVP Plug and Play China, Corporate Innovation Mobility Vertical), lunch on Saturday with Danny Fang Dongxin (ZF Corporate Material Management) and last but not least, Sunday morning run and brunch with Charles Vaillant (CTO/CDO Mann + Hummel). Innovation, scouting and digitisation were at the heart of all 3 exchanges. We’ve frequently heard in the past few years that we live in a VUCA world and too often we also witness the slashing of innovation, scouting or R&D budgets as quick wins to manage cash flow, at the same time companies often become less risk tolerant in their investments. One of my favourite papers which I cite (too often) in the last number of years is ‘To save or to invest? Strategic management during the financial crisis’ by Caroline Flammer & Ioannis Ioannou (2018). This describes how successful companies adopted a two pronged approach during a crisis of ‘saving their way and strategically investing their way out of a crisis’, demonstrating how a balanced approach of survival today while securing the future is key in a crisis. There are also other influential factors which impact investments today, such as the rapid transformation from fossil fuel to new / alternative energies while AI & digitisation are increasingly increasing into every day life. Exchanging with peers internally and externally is a great way to find common ground and discover triple win opportunities. It’s good to talk!

Time flies ~ Unearthing vivid memories of stepping into our client's Subang branch, I embraced the role of a 'customer' to gain deep insights into their manual processes before the digital revolution. That day, I invested RM 21 in a screen cleaning liquid, a small gesture that symbolized our dedication and attention to detail. The extra effort didn't go unnoticed; it earned us the well-deserved recognition of our client. I can still feel the energy in the room during those restless discussions where we untangled the complex puzzle of customers data management. We meticulously crafted multilayered UI/UX solutions to optimize products and services listing.
