Knowledge is power. This couldn’t be truer when it comes to family planning and having the ability to make informed reproductive choices. Traditionally, an ethnicity-based approach has been taken with carrier screening. However, this approach is time-consuming, costly, and susceptible to mistakes due to inaccurate patient self-reporting. In a recent paper that was published in BMJ's Journal of Medical Genetics, we show that carrier screening via an expanded panel was effective in identifying more than DOUBLE the amount of at-risk reproductive partners when compared with an ethnicity-based approach! Here’s why this matters: 🔬Identifying more couples at-risk means more families can make informed reproductive choices. 🔬Comprehensive community-wide carrier screening can lower the prevalence of genetic diseases within a population. Igentify is proud of Doron M Behar, MD, PhD, Galit Delmar, Ellie Portugali and Tova Hallas, MSc for facilitating this important research that is so fundamental for those planning a family.
