From the moment the doors opened, the atmosphere was electric. Booths from numerous esteemed companies, both big and small, were set up, ready to meet our eager students. The fair was not just a platform for job opportunities but a space where students could network, gain insights, and gather invaluable advice from industry experts. We were thrilled to witness our students engaging confidently with potential employers, showcasing their skills, and seizing the opportunities presented to them. Their determination and enthusiasm were truly inspiring. A special thank you goes out to the organizing committee whose hard work and dedication made this event possible. What a surreal experience being on the other side of ISU's Design Career Fair. It was great seeing students from all design majors stop by and chat it up with an Industrial Designer grad at an architectural studio. Big shout out to Lester Fernandes for his work in putting together our first ever Green Careers Fair! Great turnout, great speakers & great exhibitors! Some of you may think that, as an enterprise agency, BEC running a careers fair is a bit odd but to us it totally makes sense. At the 'obvious' level, as we run a green skills focused course alongside Coventry College, we are adding value by making sure that there are clear opportunities presented at the end of the course which this event has helped enabled. However, it runs a little deeper.... The reason BEC exists in the first place is we are here to empower those individuals who want to make a difference in their world to have the skills, knowledge and opportunities to do exactly that. With a lot of what we do it is about entrepreneurs looking to take on problems but this is actually the same for the individuals we've been supporting through the green skills work. Those looking to go into a career in sustainability see the emergency we face and are not prepared to stand by and watch. They want to tackle it head on and work towards a greener future. They are problem solvers, creative thinkers and innovators. They learn the power of collaboration and they are looking to get the most out of the resources we have at hand - minimising waste. Kind of sounds like something very entrepreneurial right? Therefore, this work sits hand in hand with who we are as an organisation & community. Plenty going on behind the scenes to keep our foot down on the accelerator of BEC's work in Sustainability! Watch this space...

“Specialization is for insects.” I recently attended the University of Southern Indiana Career Fair. It is always a good time visiting my alma mater. Later, I was asked would I (the prospective employer) prefer one large fair each semester (the current format) or multiple fairs that focus on a specific degree program or a particular college? So, all kinds of students (and employers) lumped into one event or an event that focuses only on the degrees that I "care about”? My first thought was, “I’d rather have an engineering specific career fair”. But on second thought... That won’t do. I’m not looking for an engineer. I’m looking for a person. Someone with the potential to be an engineer and all that that entails. I met and talked with a lot of different students, and a few were not in a degree program that my company was hiring from. The non-engineering students I talked to thought about engineering for perhaps the first time. Our table was flanked by folks from the Jacobsville Community of Evansville on one side and Easter Seals on the other. The FBI was there as well as local banks. The companies were as diverse as the students. As an engineer, I work with a myriad of people from different walks of life and from countries that span the globe. That’s a privilege. We engineers, to carry out our vocations well, to live our lives well, need to be able to serve everyone around us in a meaningful way. Everyone means every one. We can’t do that if we willfully limit our interactions to only those people with whom we share a degree/interest/world view/whatever. We are human beings, not insects. #qualityoflife #engineering #diversity
