London, Geneva and Brussels-based barristers set Matrix Chambers is committed to taking immediate and ongoing action to tackle the impact of climate change as part of its social responsibility goals. The set has made six key environmental pledges, which include reaching net zero for its Scope 1 and 2 emissions and reducing Scope 3 emissions as much as possible by the end of 2025. Matrix was the first chambers to publish its carbon footprint and green strategy, switching to 100% renewable energy, introducing a waste and recycling scheme and having a meat-free policy on site. BCohCo were thrilled to participate in a panel discussion on ‘building inclusion without being intrusive’ alongside @The European Leveraged Finance Association @Equity Employee Resource Group (ERG) Which took place in partnership with Bloomberg at their offices in #London. We considered : 💜How invisible diversity can impact employees’ Mental Health. And what mechanism of support are available for those not wanting to disclose their concerns to the whole team / organisation. 🧡Data collection and analysis. Who wins? We know data holds value similar to that of liquid gold. A majority of our audience agreed that being asked for personal data and it NOT then being used to improve organisation culture, systems and processes is what would prevent them sharing again. 💜The burden of disclosure on employees. Some panellists felt organisations should still be able to build inclusive and cohesive cultures without personal disclosure. Others felt it was a case of Equity v’s Equality. Equality is one of the key elements of sustainable development. Yet achieving equal access to education 🎓 (SDG 4), gender equality👩👧👧 (SDG 5), and reduced inequalities ⚖ (SDG 10) by 2030 is unlikely. Serious action is needed to achieve these equality objectives and the Voluntary Carbon Market can contribute. 🌳 Carbon projects have the potential to champion progress towards equality by supporting marginalised groups 📏 However, quantifying impacts on equality is challenging and impact data is often scarce 🔢 Improved equality impact metrics and data reporting could increase the robustness of the equality impacts claimed by carbon projects Read the report by Akina Wong and I "Applying the equality SDGs to the VCM" for more details and suggestions for VCM stakeholders.
