Biodiversity is key in enriching new developments in our towns and cities. With the adoption of NPF4 in February 2023, it is no surprise that the Scottish Government placed a greater emphasis on delivering biodiversity enhancement as part of its commitment to tackle the climate emergency. https://hubs.ly/Q02BnBwL0

Delighted to be giving a #keynote on behalf of the European Environment Agency at the 5th European conference on #Biodiversity and #ClimateChange: Riverine and coastal habitats. This is a key area to discuss especially given the degraded state of Biodiversity and increasing risks due to climate change. #BioClim2023

Whilst the world considers climate change and the biodiversity crisis, it is important to remember that there are still things that can be done. Earlier this year, my team showed that there can be substantial increases in the biodiversity of the seabed when we restore the once widespread European native oyster. Here, Naomi Kennon shows that biodiversity might even double in a decade: https://lnkd.in/e9FmPJSw #naturebasedsolutions #generationrestoration #oysters #ecosystemservices

“The UK is one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world and despite nature struggling against all odds to survive, more than one in seven native species face extinction and more than 40% are in decline.” But these statistics from the WWF do not mean that all is lost for UK biodiversity. In this episode of the Nature-Based Solutions takeover, we hear from Dr Samantha Lacey and Tom Ludwig from NatureMetrics on how they are helping to push biodiversity up the climate agenda.

We all know how climate change continues to present one of the most prominent issues humanity is facing, but there are other, potentially even more devastating challenges ahead. Lately, I've been reading a lot about how the loss of #biodiversity is threatening Earth’s very foundations. Wetland biodiversity depletion is a critical concern. The preservation of Mediterranean wetlands is crucial for migratory birds and adapting to climate change. Human-induced threats decrease their ability to safeguard biodiversity. Discover more at offyourmap.org. Rising sea levels impact coastal areas significantly. Between 1970-2015, nearly half of Mediterranean wetlands were lost. Habitat fragmentation, pollution, wetland conversion, water diversion, and urbanization pose additional challenges.

Climate change is set to become the primary cause of biodiversity loss by the middle of the century, according to a new study involving a York researcher. But there is still time to reduce the impact on global ecosystems and species: https://lnkd.in/d2UQMfV2

To achieve SDG15, we should plant more trees, support reforestation and advocate for policies promoting sustainable land usage. Educating ourselves and others about the importance of forests for biodiversity, climate regulation and ecosystem services is also crucial. #SDG15 #Plantingtrees #IslamicValues

The importance of #wetlands for #biodiversity... Healthy wetlands play a crucial role as habitats for diverse #plant and #animal species, and can also contribute to the ability of #ecosystems to adapt to #climate change. I want to draw attention to the importance of wetlands, particularly Mediterranean wetlands, as indispensable habitats for migratory birds. Unfortunately, these valuable ecosystems are threatened by human activities, resulting in reduced biodiversity and negative impacts on our #environment. One of the most fascinating aspects of wetlands is their role as habitat for a wide range of species. Migratory birds in particular heavily rely on these areas during their annual #migration. Mediterranean wetlands serve as crucial stopover sites for birds migrating between #Europe and #Africa. They provide resting and foraging spots, as well as shelter for #birds traveling long distances. These wetlands are vital for migratory birds to recover from their journey and gain energy before continuing their migration. Unfortunately, Mediterranean wetlands are threatened by human pressures. Urban development, agricultural expansion, and water extraction have led to significant changes in these areas. Habitat loss and disruption of natural ecosystems have severe consequences for both birds and other animals dependent on these wetlands. Moreover, climate change affects the water regime in these areas, worsening the living conditions. #Conservation and #restoration of wetlands are therefore essential to #preserve biodiversity and create resilient ecosystems that can help adapt to climate change. This requires coordinated efforts from #governments, conservation organizations, and local communities to effectively protect wetlands from further degradation. Additionally, raising awareness is crucial to inform the public about the importance of wetlands and how they contribute to sustainability. Educational programs and campaigns can make people aware of the value of these ecosystems and inspire them to take action in support of wetland conservation. To achieve this, international collaboration is of great importance. Wetland conservation requires cross-border efforts, as migratory birds do not consider national borders during their migration. Through international treaties and partnerships, countries can commit to the preservation of wetlands and jointly implement measures for their protection. In conclusion, wetlands play a crucial role in biodiversity conservation and providing habitat for migratory birds. The conservation and restoration of these valuable ecosystems are essential to counteract the negative impacts of human activities and climate change. Through collective efforts at both local and international levels, we can ensure a sustainable future where wetlands continue to thrive and contribute to a balanced ecosystem for all living beings.
