Is AI coming to Tennis? Wimbledon is considering a high-tech twist for its line-calling procedures. The tournament director, revealed that Wimbledon is exploring the idea of using AI to judge matches, a departure from the conventional on-court line officials. The ATP tour plans to replace line judges with electronic systems combining cameras and AI technology by 2025! Similarly, the US Open and Australian Open employ camera-based ball tracking systems. But the integration of AI could go far beyond just line calls! The All England Club has partnered with IBM’s AI platform to provide audio commentary and captions for video highlights, a pioneering move in the tennis world. IBM’s AI platform will also feed data into a chatbot system, creating tennis-style commentary and enhancing the viewer experience further. While this could mitigate confrontations, is this straying too far from tradition for Wimbledon? And what does it mean for commentary in other sports? Obviously if AI commentary could take hold here, there’s no reason it couldn't expand to other sports, right?
