Just after Christmas, Arlinda Zango, Rik Crutzen, Nanne De Vries, and I (Maastricht University - Health Promotion, Care And Public Health Research Institute (CAPHRI)) got word that Arlinda's paper on the #determinants of #preventive #sexual #behaviors (#condom use and voluntary counselling and testing) among first year university students in #Mozambique was accepted for publication in #reproductivehealth. This paper employs the #CIBER approach to ascertain which determinants interventions to improve preventive sexual behaviors should focus on (credits to Rik & Gjalt-Jorn Peters for developing CIBER). Last week, Jasmin Abdelsamad, Zeynep Arslan and I recorded this wonderful talk about medical anthropology and intersectional discrimination in healthcare (German only, sorry, transcripts available). It was my pleasure to talk with two experts, show some problems and discuss solutions/ways to fight it and get anti-racist organisations, learning environments and people to live peacefully together in Austria. Women are the majority of healthcare staff, we need to stand together against violence, discrimination and racism for better care and working conditions for all. Research shows that a mix of awareness building, knowledge and skills training is important to develop diversity competency. Diversity competent people are trained to behave anti-racist, anti-discriminating - this is what we all need. Research at Harm Reduction International Conference - Cutting Edge Survey Analysis Exciting News! A groundbreaking research initiative took place during HRI23 in Melbourne. Esteemed scholars from Karolinska Institute , AHRN, Best Shelter, and AHRA practitioners joined forces for an operational research meeting on women and girls impacted by drug use and sex work. Cutting-edge analysis of female health surveys revealed insights on sociodemographic characteristics, prevalent risk behaviors, and adverse health outcomes. Our aim? To transform programmatic decisions and service delivery for our female clients and communities. Tailoring harm reduction interventions to marginalized populations is key to making a tangible difference. With these insights, we can develop evidence-based programming, allocate resources effectively, and uplift the health and well-being of these remarkable women and girls. Women persistently remain invisible in so many different spheres, a condition exacerbated by the gender data gap, which detrimentally affects women’s health, safety, economic status etc. The next Aletta Jacobs School of Public Health Dive will explore how women are underrepresented in (medical) research, another arena where our visibility remains a challenge. #genderequality #womensrights  #gendergap

In this insightful article, we explored what Vaginismus is all about, its widespread lack of awareness, and the associated stigma. More than 70% of participants in early-stage clinical trials are white men. A new world-class centre aims to tackle sex and gender inequities in health and medicine. The Centre for Sex and Gender Equity in Health and Medicine is an initiative of The George Institute for Global Health, the UNSW Australian Human Rights Institute at UNSW Sydney and Deakin University, with support from collaborative partners, the Victorian Department of Health and the Association of Australian Medical Research Institutes (AAMRI). The Centre will address the underlying, binary sex and gender bias in health and medicine that leads to poorer health outcomes, evidence gaps and inefficient health spending for women and girls, intersex people, trans and gender-diverse people, and in some cases men and boys. 'While women typically live longer than men, research shows they are more likely to encounter bias when it comes to addressing health-related issues across the course of their life,' says Executive Dean of Deakin's Faculty of Health Alfred Deakin Professor Rachel Huxley. Exciting news! Our latest research paper titled "Ordeals of Sexually Violated Women and Access to Comprehensive Healthcare: A Case Study of Victims of Sexual Violence in North Kivu, Eastern Congo" has been published in the Journal of Women's Reproductive Health. This peer-reviewed open access journal sheds light on the harrowing experiences of women in Eastern Congo who are victims of sexual violence. 🔍 The study, employing an interpretive, phenomenological approach, delves into the challenges these women face in accessing medical care and rebuilding their lives post-trauma. Through in-depth interviews and Heidegger's analysis, the research uncovers the resilience of survivors amidst the absence of adequate healthcare services. 🌟 Key Findings: 1️⃣ Survivors demonstrate immense resilience despite the lack of comprehensive medical care. 2️⃣ Recovery processes are categorized into managing worries and shame, regaining happiness, healing and restoration, the need for professional assistance, and struggles in daily life. 3️⃣ Insights into dimensions that rehabilitation programs should consider are highlighted, emphasizing the importance of holistic support. 🔗 Dive deeper into the study here: https://lnkd.in/gcVUdUcD Stay informed.
