The Path to Peace is Never Pleasant ————————————————— The path to peace and reconciliation for every conflict requires a credible and respected independent party to meet the opponents, regardless of the severity of the atrocities committed. Negotiating a ceasefire in such circumstances is challenging, but those who take on this risky task often become heroes over time. There are many examples of this around the world. Of course, it is utterly repugnant to witness the devastation and suffering depicted in photos, but these initial steps are essential for achieving lasting peace. #India, for instance, has a pressing need for cheap oil to sustain its economic growth. Additionally, it aspires to be a significant player in the emerging multipolar world, as the influence of the US and other colonial powers wanes.

So we dont love India and her Modi anymore.... either (1) the US can't trust the people voting in a democracy, or (2) the US can't trust the leaders elected from a democracy, or (3) the US can't trust the people operationalizing the ideal of democracy into practice. ...but what is true is that we, Americans, will constantly find ourselves (1) championing democracy as a cure-all and vanquishing men who threaten the democracies that obediently aligned our rules...and also (2) simultaneosuly denouncing many democracies and their leaders for choosing the wrong path. It confuses the hell out of the rest of the world trying to undersatnd where we stand. Do we respect whatever decison come out of a democratic process, even when the decision goes against American agenda? or do we care mostly about getting decisions which align with our interests? If the latter, is defending other country's democracy (or removing old regime to create a path for democracy) more just an excuse to get another decision? When China was a critical US ally and partner, "one China" seemed perfectly reasonable, and our diplomats refrained from mentioning Taiwan's democracy. And now the US is 180. Taiwan's democracy matters, a lot, all of a sudden? Let us think more deeply about what is the cause and what is the effect.

If these were scenes in Russia, China, Iran or any Arab country, Western media would be calling the protesters heroes, and damning the government for mass arrests and brutal crackdowns, while calling for regime change. Since these scenes take place in the headquarters of the empire, the compliant journalists in NATO countries dare not make the assessment that the US needs a regime change, despite the President arming and enabling a genocide, while the federal and state governments brutally repress America’s students.
