New Innovation Forum podcast – The power of data in food and farming. This week: Allison Kopf from TRACT and Anne Rosenbarger from World Resources Institute speak with me about data collection and analysis in the food and agriculture sector. We talk about regulation’s impact, and why a farmer-centric approach is the only way to go. Plus: Unilever, PepsiCo and Colgate-Palmolive reassess their ambitious 2025 packaging sustainability goals amid industry challenges; why climate change and EU regulations are driving up coffee prices; the UK government's new clean energy initiative; and Mighty Earth's latest reports accuse Spain's main supermarket chains of not doing enough to fight deforestation, in the news digest with Innovation Forum's Ellen A..

“You can’t manage what you don’t measure...There is no data source that’s perfect for every use case. What really matters is how we’re taking the data that’s available now so that we can act promptly to identify and evaluate where forest loss is happening, how we can engage parties to stop that, and how we can then evolve the incentive structures to better reward behavioral changes we want to see like conservation and restoration." - Anne Rosenbarger of World Resources Institute on the Innovation Forum podcast #gfwpro #sustainablesupplychains #sustainability

Food and Ag Companies still have a lot to do when I read this benchmark from the World Benchmarking Alliance. Key findings from the 2023 Food and Agriculture Benchmark : ◼ Companies are not closing farmers’ living income gaps. ◼ Food companies are not prioritising health. ◼ More companies have set climate targets, but progress remains low. ◼ Regenerative agriculture is gaining traction, except when it comes to input use. ◼ Lack of corporate accountability hinders meaningful change. Key findings from the 2023 Nature Benchmark : ◼ Companies are failing to assess and disclose their impacts and dependencies on nature. ◼ Halting deforestation: a missed opportunity for climate, people and biodiversity. ◼ Environmental rights are not yet being recognised as human rights. ◼ As water insecurity rises, companies must accelerate their water stewardship. ◼ Board accountability: more leadership needed at the top. https://lnkd.in/e-VB_TwS

A new report from World Economic Forum lays out a breakthrough model for financing and collaboration to support farmers and accelerate the transition to sustainable food production. Research on more than 50 U.S. regenerative agriculture programs informed the report's findings, which highlight how capital and capabilities can be coordinated and deployed more effectively to address economic, technical, and social barriers to farmer adoption. Our members Bayer, Environmental Defense Fund, Nutrien Ag Solutions, PepsiCo, and Unilever and partners Practical Farmers of Iowa and Precision Conservation Management contributed to the report. Major food companies globally are squaring up to the reality of their Scope 3 or supply chain climate change commitments. For these companies to quantify – and therefore reduce – their emissions from suppliers, they typically need to work with thousands of small producers in complex and highly fragmented supply chains. This is where #MMRV – measurement, monitoring, reporting and verification – comes in. MMRV systems and platforms which meet common global accounting and reporting standards can serve companies to help track the success of interventions and investments they make and meet public commitments. In a May 17 webinar held by Reuters Events, ESMC’s Executive Director Debbie Reed will be joined by Jay Watson, Regenerative Agriculture Director from General Mills (and ESMC Board member) and Mark Eastham, Sustainable Products Lead, Ahold Delhaize USA, to discuss the future of #MMRV and #Scope3 interventions in agriculture, including around including impacts such as biodiversity and water in addition to carbon. The panelists will discuss learnings from the past five years in driving CPG/Retail programs and will propose solutions to reduce the complexity of data gathering and processing and bring more actors to the table. Register for the May 17, 11am ET webinar https://lnkd.in/eWrahnSy Read the full article on this topic, including an interview with Debbie Reed https://lnkd.in/ejbxBJVi

For a number of years, we’ve heard that regenerative agriculture is too context-specific to define. In fact, there is still no legal definition. Over the same period, we’ve seen a huge increase in the use of the term, but with little action to back it up. Has the lack of standardisation inhibited progress? And without an agreed-upon definition, are vague commitments and a lack of substance inevitable? At the "Future of Food and Beverage" Conference taking place in Amsterdam next month, Ben Horsbrugh, IDH Food Systems Transformation and Climate Adaptation Global Director will moderate a session where field experts will discuss the opportunities, challenges and how we can ensure industry alignment. 👉 Register now: https://lnkd.in/eSqVygvb Hannah Oborne Innovation Forum #foodsystems #climateadaptation

🗣️ Join our webinar hosted in partnership with Food and Land Use Coalition (FOLU) and WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development. Discover the role that agrifood companies can and must play in halving global #FoodSystems emissions by 2030! The event will unpack key insights from the recently published report series, ‘Future Fit Food and Agriculture’, which reveal that less than 2% of the food sector’s annual revenues is needed per year to mitigate ½ of global food system emissions by 2030. Speakers Luke Pritchard, Morgan Gillespy, Emeline Fellus, Owen Bethell and Milindi Sibomana, PhD will explore the financial implications of the food sector’s #NetZero and #NaturePositive transition, as well as the influence of existing and emerging voluntary standards on sustainability regulation. Critically, they will discuss pathways for overcoming the inequities that farmers face in implementing climate and nature solutions, and provide key recommendations for how companies can partner with governments and other key value chain actors to distribute the costs, risks and benefits of mitigation equitably. 📅 April 11 🔗 https://lnkd.in/etQ9ruHb #FutureFit #Nature
