Innovation Forum insights – Tackling agricultural emissions and food loss. IFC - International Finance Corporation’s senior industry specialist Ahmad Slaibi, and Tom Cumberlege, director at The Carbon Trust, talk with me about their collaborative efforts in developing a tool to address the food loss challenge in the agricultural sector. They explore the tool’s potential for agribusinesses at reducing greenhouse emissions by tracking food losses, and its broader implications for food security and environmental sustainability.

The FAO´s annual flagship report State of Food and Agriculture 2023 focuses on the true cost of food to transform agrifood systems. It argues that all costs (and benefits) need to be accounted for to make a business case for #agricultural #transformation. True cost accounting for GHG emissions and on the other hand carbon sequestration would reveal that the value to society of agrifood systems is likely well beyond what is measured in gross domestic product (GDP). FAO is an important policy influencer on the intergovernmental scene - we are curious to see how the national policies will shape and if more ETS schemes will emerge covering the agricultural sector soon. https://lnkd.in/dxXdx8PV #regenerativeagriculture #climate #insetting #decarbonisation

An interesting read by the FAO this year - seems like the business case for regenerative agriculture is entering the public policy and discourse.

How much do you set aside from each paycheck to invest in your future? 🤔 10 percent? 5 percent?... 2 percent? Research suggests that less than 2% of the global Food Sector's annual average revenues is required for a transition to regenerative or sustainable practices 🌱 The result? Resilient soils + Reliable food production + 9 GtCO2e emissions mitigated annually (that is almost 1/2 the global food system's emissions by 2030)! Sounds like a reasonable future investment to me!🌍 📈 To find out more visit: https://lnkd.in/gzbK_hWP Research led by: WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development Food and Land Use Coalition (FOLU) We Mean Business Coalition #SustainableAgriculture #RegenerativeAgriculture #ClimateAction

Agriculture remains crucial today for providing food security, livelihoods, and economic stability worldwide. In the future, it will be even more vital due to increasing global population, climate change challenges, and the need for sustainable food production methods. Advancements in technology and innovation will play key roles in enhancing productivity, efficiency, and resilience in agriculture, ensuring its importance continues to grow.

Climate-smart agriculture is an integrated approach to managing landscapes that addresses the interlinked challenges of food security and climate change. Tune in to Dr. Patrick Cortbaoui, Ag.Eng., Director at McGill's M.A. Gilliam Institute for Global Food Security as he delves into the four essential institutional functions crucial for advancing Climate Smart Agriculture. The first function involves disseminating information about changing climate conditions and potential responses. The second function focuses on nurturing innovation, developing, and sharing new practices and knowledge. The third function aims to promote investments in physical infrastructure and facilitate learning of innovative coping strategies and technology adoption. Lastly, the fourth function involves providing insurance to help farmers cope with climate-related shocks and risks associated with adopting new agricultural practices. Last week I headed to London to the UK Flour Millers R&D Seninar. A Fantastic session, with very interesting presentations and a chance to catch up with connections within the flour & grain industry. I’m always fascinated about the science that goes into getting food onto our table. From the presentations there is some incredible research and discussions happening in the UK food & agricultural sector around… The challenges climate change pose, cutting down emissions in the agriculture sector and how do we grow wheat in a more sustainable way? All without impacting the quality of the bread on our tables. #flourmilling #wheat #sustainableagriculture #foodandagriculture

Achieving economic resilience is seen as THE problem of the AgriFood System, in some circles. A focus on environmental aspects (e.g. reducing and reversing land degradation, water pollution and greenhouse gas emissions), and/or addressing social issues such as those that affect smallholder farmers are THE imperatives. In other places, a sustainable project is one that would remain financially-stable in the long-term, inspite of its environmental effects or social costs. The FAO tool, SAFA, provides a holistic/system-based framework for assessing the sustainability of AgriFood Systems. It addresses the four dimensions of sustainability (good governance, environmental integrity, economic resilience, and social well-being), using several themes, sub-themes, and indicators. Its final output, a sustainability polygon (see image below), then allows decision-makers to address the shortfalls of the assessed entities or farm enterprises. Please get in touch (inbox) if you need the sustainability of your agribusiness operations or smallholder farming systems assessed. The assessment is useful in improving the financial performance of agribusiness operations (e.g input cost optimisation, investments...) and promoting smallholder livelihoods, while protecting the environment, through good governance. #AgriFood, #SystemsThinking, #Sustainability, #SDGs, #FAO. #SAFA, #GoodGovernance, #EnvironmentalIntegrity, #EconomicResilience, #SocialWellbeing.

📢 Launched today - In partnership with Food and Land Use Coalition (FOLU) and WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development we have launched two reports which aim to support the food sector to mitigate 9 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent in company Value Chains by 2030 – roughly ½ of all global Food System emissions. ✅ Report 1 in the series supports food sector companies to understand priority voluntary frameworks for climate and nature, how they relate to each other, and their increasing influence on sustainability regulation. ✅ Report 2 supports the food sector to assess the financial costs and benefits of implementing a range of climate change mitigation solutions, capable of reducing 90% of agricultural and land use change emissions in company #ValueChains by 2030. That’s ½ of all global #FoodSystem emissions! 🔗 Download the reports to find out how companies can advance a more sustainable, equitable, resilient and #FutureFit food sector 👉 https://lnkd.in/da8saWGA #ValueChains #FoodSystems

Launched today, 26th of March, a new report series titled Future Fit Food and Agriculture, highlights the need for food and agriculture companies to rapidly adapt to changing sustainability regulation, and explores the costs and benefits of mitigating the largest portion of #foodsector emissions. The analysis shows how investments of US $205bn per year between 2025-2030 – or less than 2% of projected food sector revenues –could mitigate nearly half of #globalfoodsystem emissions and unlock many other benefits. https://lnkd.in/gB9CZuhM

We cannot talk about system transformation without talking about #power. Power dynamics shape every aspect of our #FoodSystems — from corporate influence to governance structures. Yet, many processes overlook these dynamics, hindering meaningful transformation. Addressing who controls food and farming is crucial for developing equitable, resilient, healthy, inclusive, and regenerative food systems. So, how can we work more systemically to accelerate progress towards a more sustainable food system? As part of the third cycle of a global Co-inquiry on food systems transformation, UNDP FACS held four dialogue sessions to address challenges and potential solutions to unlock change in the food and agricultural sector. Our report "Working with power in Multi-Stakeholder Processes" unpacks the key insights captured during these four sessions from collective sense-making.
