~Beneath the Surface of a Sustainable Food System~ 🌱🌍 "Our work with future-proofing our food does not end at making it sustainable". That was the dominant thought in my head after yesterday's event at the European Parliament: a fireside chat with Robert Bonnie, USDA Under Secretary for Farm Production and Conservation, hosted by European Food Forum MEP Irène Tolleret. The discussion revolved around -you guessed it- the creation of sustainable food systems, and just to re-iterate, making our future food systems just sustainable will definitely NOT be enough to sustain them. ♻⏳ Our food systems, besides sustainable, also need to be viable in the long term. They need to continue to provide nourishment, protect the environment, support communities, and adapt to changing circumstances over the long haul. What are the elements needed to get there? ✅ Inclusivity: There's great diversity among the producers, and the viability of small-scale and local farmers must be taken into account. ✅ An accountability framework: It's the only way to ensure engagement, compliance, and progress tracking. ✅ Empowerment: Efforts should be collaborative and embrace the people that are in the forefront of change, especially the young farmers. ✅ Transparency: Scientific data is objective and undisputable, thus standardizing its format and sharing it openly is a sure way to make progress. ✅ Value Recognition and Maintenance: The value for the farmers in sustainability will be created from the market, the governments, and the scientists. Once we've found it, we need to make sure it's here to stay. 💚🌟 So, that's how true sustainability looks like beneath the surface. Any thoughts? #Sustainability #FoodSystems #ClimateAction #ClimateChange #FutureOfFood #FoodGoals #SustainableFood #SustainableAgriculture

🌱 What is a sustainable food system?🌱 A sustainable food system isn't just about how we grow and distribute food; it's a comprehensive approach that considers the broader impact of our food choices on the environment, economy, and society. It's about finding balance and harmony between these interconnected systems to ensure that our food production methods are not only sustainable but also contribute positively to the well-being of our planet and its inhabitants. 🌿🌍💰 In a sustainable food system: 🌿 Environmental Sustainability: It prioritizes practices that minimize harm to the environment, such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions, conserving water resources, protecting biodiversity, and promoting soil health through sustainable farming methods like organic farming, permaculture, and agroforestry. 🌿 Economic Viability: It supports fair wages and working conditions for farmers and food workers, promotes local economies by prioritizing regional food systems and small-scale producers, and encourages investment in sustainable agriculture and food enterprises that create long-term economic stability. 🌿 Social Justice: It focuses on ensuring equitable access to nutritious and culturally appropriate food for all communities, addressing food insecurity and hunger, promoting food sovereignty and food justice, and empowering marginalized groups within the food system, including smallholder farmers, indigenous communities, and food workers. A sustainable food system nurtures our planet, economy, and communities. It's a holistic approach that ensures healthy, eco-friendly, and socially just food production. Let's advocate for change and embrace a brighter food future! 🌟 Let's cultivate a food system that nourishes our bodies, respects our planet, and uplifts our communities! 🥦🤝🌿🍽️🌍 . . . . . #SustainableFood #EcoFriendlyEating #FoodSystem #HealthyCommunities #GreenEconomy #SocialJustice #SustainableLiving #EcoConscious #FoodForChange #SustainabilityMatters #NourishTheWorld #PlanetFriendly #LocalSourcing #FarmToTable #FoodSecurity #EconomicStability #SustainableSolutions #GlobalGoals #HealthyChoices #EcoConsciousLiving #ClimateAction #FoodJustice #ZeroWaste #ResponsibleConsumption #CommunitySupport #FutureOfFood #WholesomeEating #SustainableDevelopment #FoodEquity #SocialImpact #BetterFood #GreenPlanet #HealthyFuture

🌱🌎 To create a more #sustainable future, is it often said that we should shift towards a plant-based diet, buy local produce, and buy food that is produced in an environmentally friendly and biodiversity-positive manner. However, implementing these ideals proves to be challenging. 'A whole system rethink is needed' says Jeanne Nel, head of WUR's Biodiverse Environment Programme. According to her, it requires simultaneous efforts across sectors, including finance, government, food processing companies, and supermarkets, to make nature-inclusive food accessible within urban systems. In this article, WUR researchers study local initiatives for sustainable food production in Thailand to The Netherlands to gain insights into transforming the food system. These perspectives illustrate how food production can actively contribute to biodiversity, offering valuable lessons for reshaping our global approach to food.
