Asymmetric vs. Symmetric Competition. One of the most fascinating aspects of leadership decision-making and strategy formation for me. For many decades, symmetrical competition has been the foundation for most leadership strategies. How can we compete and then beat our closest competitor? However, this is set to be a "zero-sum view of competition, and it can set up a race to the bottom that no one can win", stated writer Joan Magretta. Given the shift to more innovative, agile and technological business models, the boundaries of industries are much less static, and therefore competition can come from outside of sector. Business leaders need to look out for both disintermediation and intermediation and learn to harness the possibilities of both forms in the search for future strategies.
