Executive protection professionals have diverse backgrounds, with some possessing law enforcement or military experience while others do not. An optimal approach to personal protection involves a blend of HARD and SOFT skills, irrespective of the protector's background. Who you choose to hire depends on your preferences and beliefs. While some hard skills such as: 💪 physical ability 🔫 firearms and 👊 defense training are crucial for immediate protection, implementing 📊 risk assessments 🔎 precautions ⚖️ countermeasures to avoid harm is equally important. Take the “art of avoidance”, for example; executive protection professionals routinely scout locations in advance to define optimal arrival and departure points and employ route analysis to minimize risks for vehicle and foot traffic. 🕵️♂️ Preparation and planning trump brute force, which is often viewed and used as a last resort. ➤ Risk assessment, ➤ Advance work ➤ Intelligence activities ➤ Surveillance detection ➤ Physical security processes are just a few disciplines that may be defined as soft skills.  Qualified protection specialists are familiar with all of these, plus many more. 🙊Debunking some common security guard myths 🙊     They're Just Bouncers ➡️ One common misconception is that security guards are essentially glorified bouncers who only know how to handle physical altercations. In reality, security guards are trained in various aspects of security, including surveillance, emergency response, and conflict resolution.     They're Always Armed ➡️ While some security guards may be armed depending on the location and specific security needs, many are not. Some of these comments are uncalled for saying we are uneducated and unskilled.We take corses in different things.e.g safety training medical training cctv operating peoples welfare and health.We are trained to do a lot of things the public are very unaware of .We put our lives at risk every day or night we go to work.We are getting a lot of these negative attitudes against us I think because of the poor pay we get .High paid people get high respect but low paid do not .Maybe if we had a more serious wage it would get a more serious attitude and respect off of people. And minimum wage is poor pay for the responsible we have to take on .All security needs a real update on wages.

CPP community what terminology do you use to describe team composition/positions and functions? There are some commonalities between US vs Europe, however there are different terms to describe the similar functions, as does it differ from royal, diplomatic, military, police, government to corporate sector. Mine is hybrid very much influenced by early British literature from the 80’s and US secret service designations. Who is the person within arm’s reach of the principal? TL, BG? When looking after a single protectee, I usually take that role. I call the “shots” for the team and am the primary liaison with the principal. On larger protective details with several teams and principals I will take a more security director role, in charge of moving all the pieces. There are advantages and disadvantages for holding several positions. When the TL is the BG, they are multi-tasking and attention may be diverted from the principal or may not be able to respond to the teams’ requests. That is where the trust and competence of a good 2iC is critical. In my final article for 2023, I explore the traditional view of security, often framed as 'gates, guards, and guns,' leading to the perception that resources are diverted from development to security. What I've witnessed challenges this norm, shedding light on the idea that security in development projects is sometimes treated as a zero-sum game. Tight schedules, budget constraints, and the belief that security measures hinder flexibility can make these precautions seem impractical. Another layer to this issue lies in the personnel involved. Sometimes, the challenges stem from the wrong individuals working on these projects. It's crucial for CPOs to be well-prepared and competent in handling various security situations to ensure the safety of their clients, teammates and the agent himself. That way is crucial that the companies choose very well their agents in the field for high-risk or hostile countries.
