Playing on the same ice as your boyhood idols will be a long lasting memory. I was able to participate 35 years ago in the #hartfordwhalers mini one-on-one as a Squirt and it drove me to dream throughout my playing career. So what is the big picture in all of this? - Competition is healthy. - Competiton grows friendships. - Competition and knowing the score forces humans to think about being better. - Competition creates gritty life habits and a never quit attitude. - Competition forces your to lose over and over, which I believe creates #reslience and #emotionalintelligence - Competitiveness requires a long-term plan as athletes play a sport for years before knowing their ultimate value in college and beyond. To get the most out of our professional careers we must learn to ‘play’ business like a long-term game. #reputation matters, your compete level matters, how you treat your teammate matters, your continuous improvement is the game changer. What kind of Champion you are, matters! 🏆🏆🏆 With the popularity of basketball across our great nation and their being so many great players playing a lot of different tournaments and leagues have been created. This is great for competition, this increases opportunities. However, we live in a world where there can only be one Number 1. American fans, all the players and teams, and the basketball community wants to know the answer to this one simple question, "Who is the best professional basketball team in the USA, outside the NBA"? The United States Basketball Championship USBC is an invitational tournament that seeks to find the top pro basketball team across the country and have them play till there is only 1 United States Basketball Champion, the #1 pro basketball team in America. The great thing about sports is all arguments can be settled on the court. If you want to be the best, you have to prove it and earn it by beating the best. The recruiting process can be a difficult time for young athletes. Here is my advice for young athletes in middle school and high school who want to compete in a college sport: 1. You have to go the extra mile (Going to summer camps, national tournaments, training regiments, etc). 2. Put yourself out there and email the coaches at the schools you want to attend. 3. Go to the college camp at the school you want to attend (I went to the Army Wrestling Ranger Camp in the summer and it really helped me in my path to college). There are obviously many other things to consider in the recruiting process as well - these are just my top three tips. That is why I believe it’s so important for young middle school and high school athletes to have a college athlete as their mentor. “Champions want to see the bar rise, they don’t cling to it hoping it stays forever in their grasp.” This year we all watched the bar rise, and witnessing that has been incredible. As I watched the tears fill in my youngest daughter’s eyes after Iowa failed to win the National Championship, I couldn’t help but think of the messaging leading up to this game, that Caitlin Clark’s “GOAT” status was dependent on winning a national title, and how much weight we put on winning championships rather than developing champions. It’s a dangerous message. It is a message that is rooted in an outcome that is out of one’s control, and aims to diminish the accomplishments that are. The message that to be a champion you must win a championship, is simply not true. Champions are leaders, inspiring others to be better and do better. Champions care about being their best, about being invaluable, not about being the best- because they know that if you allow others to determine your worth, you will never be good enough. Champions want to see the bar rise, they don’t cling to it hoping it stays forever in their grasp. The supportive comments from Clark and Paige Bueckers about Juju Watkins are proof that champions know that their greatness comes from within and isn’t dependent on just the numbers on a scoreboard. Champions celebrate when their record is broken, because they don’t need to keep others down to stay on top. South Carolina played a great game today and the team and their coach(es) deserve to celebrate. I am in no means trying to diminish their accomplishment. But we have to be careful about the message the young ears around us hear when our team doesn’t win. Because while the odds of them playing in a national title game are slim, the odds of them failing at something that means a lot to them are all but a certainty. And I for one, do not want my daughters to believe that their greatness is only determined in those moments. I want to teach them how to live in the “and” not the “or”. How to lose a championship and be a champion. And I feel incredibly lucky to have this Iowa team to show them exactly what that looks like.
