Can a rooftop garden be a form of political expression? Geographers interviewed rooftop gardeners in Hanoi, Vietnam, in an open access article published in Geographical Research. The researchers examined the many motivations driving the gardeners. Food safety and environmental concerns were strongly expressed. The desire to be healthy and educate future generations was mentioned by many. Gardeners discussed if they share their crops with loved ones, how they sourced their gardening materials and where they found information. Self-sufficiency gardening: The solution to the cost of living crisis? How big a garden would you need to be self-sufficient for a family of four? Research in the 1970s by John Jeavons and the Ecology Action Organisation found that 4000 square feet (about 370 square metres) of growing space was enough land to sustain one person on a vegetarian diet for a year, with about another 4000 square feet (370 square metres) for access paths and storage – so that’s a plot around 80 feet x 100 feet (24m x 30m). How much you can grow in this space will depend on your climate, weather and soil and, crucially, how much time you have. Tending to 4000 square feet, particularly at the height of the growing season, will take many hours a week. 📷 @good_life_garden

ECOLOGY IN GARDENING Tonight I was reading Planting Design: Gardens in Time and Space, a 2005 book by Piet Oudolf and Noel Kingsbury. In it they argue that we should pay more attention to ecology and habitat and that such focus would allow us better decisions in plant choice and also management. So, it’s almost 20 years later. Are we doing a better job today of thinking about ecology when planting? If not, what are we missing? #horticulture #garden #gardening #plants #nature 🌱 🌱 🌱 🌱 🌱 🌱 🌱 🌱 🌱 🌱 🌱 🌱 🌱 🌱 🌱 🌱 Every weekend, I send out a newsletter to 1000+ gardeners where I share skills to help them grow.
