As a FAMU alumna, whenever I met an HBCU alumna, especially a recent STEM graduate, I want to support them in their career. Today, I met Serena E. , a Spelman alumna and purchased copies of her book MSITU, about an urban forest for my nonprofit Science, Engineering and Mathematics Link Inc STEM Literacy Program. This book tells a story about invasive species in an urban forest, and it is a great environmental educational tool for kids to learn about plant identification and environmental vocabulary. #BLACKandSTEM #FAMUAlumna #HBCUAlumna

Let’s stop romanticizing STEM as “the” solution to our world’s problems. To “save the world,” we need transdisciplinary perspectives in STEM. Tesha Sengupta-Irving and Thomas Philip share how transdisciplinary teaching helps students see past local and global problems as having technical solutions to instead see where STEM intersects with questions of human dignity, rights, and futures. What steps could you take to move toward more transdisciplinary STEM teaching in your school or district?

#fridayvibes "Every time my daughter sees a ziplock bag, she shouts water cycle!" - a parent called up to share this yesterday. This is what making science relatable looks like. Once a child can retain, recollect and relate - the 3 Rs as I like to call them - understanding comes naturally. And that is what hands-on STEM Education can achieve.
