Team: On the eve of Memorial Day and not much more than a week from the 80th Anniversary of the beginning of Operation Overlord is a good time to reflect on the powerful gift we have been bestowed through the sacrifice of others. Specifically, the opportunity to effectively govern ourselves as free people. With that inheritance comes the compelling obligation to pass it on. Effective self-governance is not entertainment, or sport, or theater, and celebrity is not leadership. Representative democracy is tough work that demands curiosity, the respect for the rule-of-law, and citizens who can disagree agreeably on matters of policy knowing that they share a great many common concerns. Similarly, leaders of character understand their own accountability and the duty to others that comes with authority. As I see it, we owe future generations no less than the opportunity that has been given to us at great cost to so many. 🏍 Windsor Engineers' #IT guy, Bruce Anderson, took a road trip this month on his Harley. His destination: Sellersburg, IN and the Seed of Abraham Motorcycle Club’s National meeting. From Duluth, MN, Bruce traveled with six buddies through Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, and Wisconsin. The trip down was a blistering success, with the temperature at a “feels like” 🌡118°. Each day began with a prayer for safety: for the day, for those around them to be aware of them, and for their families while they were gone. Once in Sellersburg, they had a couple of days of meetings and hung out with guys from other chapters. 🥩 On the way home, humidity broke and the rest of the ride back home was comfortable. They had time in the pool, followed by dinner at Steak n Shake in Rockford, Illinois. (YUM!) Despite a few wrong terms and mishaps (like the flat tire, and the time someone in Indiana almost ran them off the road, it was a great adventure. “It was a great trip with a great group of guys I call my friends, brothers, family,” says Bruce. 🧡 Thank you for sharing, Bruce! What is being done to address the overwhelming sense of purposelessness? I had an incredible conversation with Jordan Mayer from Made4More, Inc today about helping high school students explore their God-given purpose through mentorship based business internships (and so much more). Jordan paints a compelling picture for a future that integrates multi-generational church bodies by providing pathways for young to be mentored by older church members in a Christian work environment. The average person spends most of their waking life at work. It's time for the church to better support a Christ-centric purpose for each member form a young age - no matter if that is purpose filled employment, business ownership, or non-profit work. Around this time 15 years ago, I had the wonderful opportunity to repeat Florida Phase of United States Army Ranger School.   I failed my patrol because another element didn’t do what they were supposed to do during Actions on the Objective. With everyone droning like zombies, technically it wasn’t my “fault” they didn’t do what they were supposed to, but their failure was my responsibility. So NO-GO!   One funny thing about Ranger School is that it really isn’t that bad. Yeah, it totally sucks, but you get used to the suck. After starting at Benning in January & doing Mountains in the dead of winter; redoing flat, balmy #Florida was a mere walk in the swamp.   As a bonus, since I was in the Texas Army National Guard, I didn’t have anything else going on besides an upcoming deployment. So it was another 45 days getting paid without any bills or expenses.   Another funny thing about Ranger School (aside from all the #Money you save), is how much mental free time you have. You’re always busy, but you have plenty of time to think.   So I picked apart every way I could have done better. I’d “done my job” & told other people what they should do, yet I had failed to anticipate my element’s potential for failure & put myself where I needed to be to avoid those failures from occurring. It was a harsh & brutal lesson, but also indelibly engraved it my mind.   It traumatized me enough that now during planning, I’m very much “in the weeds”. I want subordinates to walk me through their both plans & contingency plans. I also want to rehearse things multiple times while trying contingency plans. As the cliché goes, “rehearse it until you can’t get it wrong”. I probably go overboard with it. But I don't like making an ass of myself anymore than I already do naturally.   Which brings me to my poorly concealed distain for most United States Army Reserve “#Leaders”. I’ve seen everyone from Generals to team leaders implicitly or explicitly state that upon clicking “send” on an email or concluding a Ben Stein inspired reading of a garbage OPORD, they have absolved themselves of responsibility for what happens next. It’s the “But, I gave the OPORD” version of “I was only following orders”.   For many years, I was very confused by this behavior. What’s the point of being a “#Leader” if you just want to tell people what to do, instead of the grappling with the messiness of leading them & overcoming the intrinsic flaws of man? But, I finally realized that most (but certainly not all) “leaders” in the US Army don’t want to actually lead anything. They just want to summit the greased pole & get their ass kissed. Upon actually reaching the summit, most have no idea what to do aside from mimicking what has always been done: Soldiers mostly doing meaningless administrative actions & promoting people for checking boxes.   It's both easy to do & easy to quantify for the true coin of the realm: metrics.   Meme included, because it literally was me in the prone sleeping.
