FRESH New London organizes residents to create community ownership and decision making power in their access to food. Through community gardens and urban farms, seasonal youth programs, mutual aid pantries and skill sharing events, FRESH New London is building momentum toward a city where everyone has a fair shot at wellbeing. Through movement building and community centering work, FRESH New London focuses on shifting harmful patterns of the past, fully embodying Wellbeing Design Principle 3: heal and regenerate. Food access, land control, housing and education are all impacted by racism embedded in our systems to this day. By lifting up Indigenous and other Black and Brown cultural food practices, they break down barriers to culturally relevant access to food and expand awareness of restorative and sustainable values. #WellbeingDesignChallenge #Wellbeing #FoodJustice #FoodSystems #Equity

A year from today, we were asked: “What will it take to create a more accessible, equitable, and complete food security system?” • We laid a foundation to this question and part of our solution is- solving food apartheid by recreating our own food system in East Knoxville through a Black led movement. • • We had the pleasure of presenting our year one shareout of our impact report. We are honored to be a part of the food and land justice work in our city. It excites us to think about the future of Black Knoxville's Food Landscape in East Knoxville. We wouldn't be able to do this work without United Way Greater Knoxville, Canvas Can Do Miracles, 3 Cubed plus a plethora of other partners who fund and support our movement. • • To think we are just at Y1 & have covered so much ground is astonishing. Again, we couldn’t do this without a receptive community, committed volunteers, aligned collaborators & partners. Last year, we had an ambition goal of establishing 100 gardens in the city by year 1. Well, we will have a count of 167+ gardens on the ground by December 2023. It’s an honor to lead this collective as it takes courage, grit, and fortitude to do this work while sowing seeds of resistance and wisdom. Tomorrow's Soup and Bread goes towards supporting Austin Eats. Come out and get some delicious food, enjoy live music, games, and great company! Austin Eats is a 22-member collaborative is focused on creating a more resilient community, especially a more resilient food system, through action, learning, justice, and equity and inclusion. Austin’s 90,000+ residents currently only have two full grocery stores available for a community that is Chicago’s largest community area in size. Austin Eats helps the community realize its desire to revitalize the image and spirit of Austin by creating environments that foster health and wellness and promote healthier food choices across Austin. Like other One Earth Local programs, Austin Eats is working to build a replicable model to be used for other communities. Getting a bold idea to pilot stage requires a gargantuan level of energy, belief and will. Huge respect for Jonathan Harper FRSA and Future Foundations for getting this off the ground. We so desperately need new models and I love what Jonathan shared on our call; the idea that if we want to change culture we need to bring the change to the people and where better than school canteens. I see so many opportunities for this to develop into other public dining spaces (Dr Marsha Smith). Also opportunities to model better approaches to feeding ourselves, bringing in thinking from the SDG2 Advocacy Hub with their #beansishow campaign and Henry Dimbleby and Christoffer van Tulleken’s battle to educate around the junk food cycle and highly processed foods. We must be careful not to replicate and bring together all the agencies doing work in this space to understand what the barriers are and what policy change needs to happen . But first, we need to prove the concept and understand the ‘appetite’ in the UK, beyond the charitable space, for public dining. If WW2 saw the introduction of over 2000 British restaurants (offering price-capped, nutritious meals) that operated as businesses, intending to de-stigmatise poverty and give equal access to healthy food, then perhaps it’s time to look at how that model might look in today’s world.

From 'community spaces' to low-cost food hubs, a range of support remains available for residents across the Borough struggling with the cost-of-living. The help on offer from Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council is part of the authority's 'A Fairer Stockton-on-Tees' (FSOT) framework, launched in 2021. And a meeting of the Council's Cabinet on Thursday (May 16), heard how in addition to the long-term vision of reducing inequalities, there's also more short-term focus on guiding residents through the current economic climate. This has led to a number of avenues of help for residents, accessible by visiting the 'here to help hub' web page (https://lnkd.in/eSgPihnj). "We know that there are a number of residents who continue to feel the wide-ranging effects of the cost-of-living crisis, but thankfully there is lots of help at hand," says the Council's Leader, Councillor Bob Cook. "For example, the 'community spaces' initiative now has more than 70 venues signed up, which goes well beyond just providing a warm space and has a broader offer to include things like learning and skills courses. The number of residents who have utilised a community space now stands at nearly 3,000 over the last 12 months. "The Bread and Butter Thing low-cost food hubs, ran by the brilliant local volunteers, have proven to be very popular for residents and are a vital lifeline for close to 400 families each week. In total, more than 6,000 people have accessed the offer, which is very heartening indeed. "We also held 'here to help' events across a range of venues and they were attended by a number of partners such as Moneywise and Cleveland Fire Brigade. Look out for more of these events to come soon. "And this outstanding work alongside our partners comes at a time when our 'Powering Our Future' programme ramps up across the Council to ensure we're fully utilising the potential of our communities and voluntary sector to provide better outcomes for our residents."
