Paying a CPO $300k a year to write Jira tickets and groom a backlog? Seriously? Why are some companies hiring heavy-weight Product Leaders when they don't have to? There's this assumption floating around that the 1st Product hire must be a Product Leader. But that is nonsense! In some cases, it may make sense to hire a Product Leader, like a Head of Product or CPO who can operate in a "Player/Coach" type role. In others, it makes sense to hire a Product Manager who will be a player, and then hire a Product Leader when the business and founding team are ready. If you are unsure of what you need and when to hire for it, DM me and we can provide you with insights and recommendations on the best type of Product hire for your needs! #hiring #recruitment #productmanagement

If you are paying a Chief Product Officer $300k a year to write Jira tickets, what are you doing??? Yeah, I have this conversation multiple times a week with Product Leaders who by their admission have been hired into the business and are being overpaid for the work they end up doing. "They could have just hired a Product Manager" I've worked with enough start-ups over the years to know that a player/coach type CPO should expect to do a bit of everything whilst the company is young. But unless the company plans to scale quickly, do you really need a $300k a year CPO? Not really. It's a waste of money and talent and will only lead to unnecessary cash burn and attrition. Many companies struggle to identify the gaps in their business and what type of Product professional they might need. A $300k CPO might look good on paper and appease the investors, but are they right for the business? Maybe not. Luckily for companies facing these issues, Producto exists and can help diagnose and guide them on what type of Product hire they need and recruit the right person for the role. Some companies will need a $300k CPO and others would be fine with a $150k Product Manager. It just depends on the need. #hiring #recruitment #productmanagement

When might a Fractional Product Manager be right for your organization? Here are three common reasons our clients choose to bring on a fractional product manager to support their product development efforts: 1. Supplement or extend the existing Product team. Seasonal fluctuations, an aggressive product roadmap, staffing changes, or new products/features may require additional support. By bringing on a fractional product manager or analyst, other team members can focus on their core responsibilities. 2. A full-time Product Manager is not (yet) needed. Early-stage companies or new products may benefit from part-time product expertise without the cost of a full-time hire. A fractional PM can mitigate risks and adapt to workload changes when navigating fluctuating market conditions or testing new business strategies. Choosing fractional or contract product support is often a quicker way to fill a gap and expedite project progress. 3. Re-organization or transitioning from traditional to agile development methodologies. If a Product Manager role is new to the organization, you may want an experienced fractional Product Manager to help establish the structure, processes, and role expectations. When the decision is made to hire a full-time product manager, the fractional manager can often assist in training or transitioning the new hire, ensuring continuity and effective handover. If you have a need for a fractional Product Manager or want to discuss if this might be right for your organization, reach out and let's discuss if we can help! #fractional #productmanager #productmanagement

I can't count the number of calls I've had with prospective startup clients telling me they need a fractional CPO or product leader, only to tell me they don't have any other product folks yet. I love that moment when I get to be honest and tell them they actually don't need a CPO at this stage and better yet, can get even more relevant skills and expertise for way less money. That's our value prop at work, love to see it. The Product Consult #productmanagement #consultants #productmanagers #tech #startups
