Most practices put themselves at serious financial risk by purchasing amniotic membranes up front and storing them for future use with the hope of insurance reimbursement. What if they do not reimburse? It’s simply too much financial risk to take on. As a result, many practices have stopped using amniotic membranes and patients suffer. That’s the past. Now there is a much better way with our Amniotic Membrane.
Our program takes ALL the financial risk out of using amniotic membranes so you can confidently offer your patients the best available care. Our model is simple:
1. You identify wound patients that qualify for a membrane
2. CanyonMD does all insurance verification and Pre-auth for you
3. Pending approval in about an hour, membrane is shipped to you overnight
4. You have ZERO upfront cost and ZERO financial exposure
5. You only pay when you receive reimbursement a couple weeks later
6. Our reimbursement on membranes is the highest in the industry: $1,350 per sq cm for Impax dual layer amniotic membrane or $1,045 for Dermacyte single layer.
7. If you don’t get reimbursed, you don’t pay

You should listen to Kent Thiry.
I was fortunate to stumble on our DaVita investment in 2019 (which we just wrote a little about at commonshares.substack.com! Shameless plug: subscribe free!)
DaVita and its CEO, Kent Thiry, taught me a lot about leadership and a business' value proposition to customers and the world. I bought the stock not just because it was cheap, but because of its value proposition to both the payers (insurers & government), and to its clinical patients. At this point, that value prop cannot be replicated.
That value prop was built by Thiry and his team over decades. He had one goal: "We're going to build the best damn kidney dialysis company in the world", and he did.
When we bought, CEO Kent Thiry had been leading DaVita 20 years. He first joined when operational issues nearly bankrupted the company. He turned it around and consolidated the dialysis industry. In the process, shareholders made ~40 times their money over Thiry's ~20 year tenure, 20% compounded.
Thiry took the scale from consolidating the industry and reinvested a portion of the gains to improve the lives of thousands of patients with ESKD (end-stage kidney disease). Mortality rates at clinics fell. Hospitalization rates fell. And more. All while growing profits and maintaining strong returns on capital.
I listened to the attached fireside chat while doing my due diligence. You should, too. Thiry and DaVita should be a business school case study. He's a phenomenal human being with clear principles and a strong set of ethics, an excellent leader, a business builder, and steward of capital, all rolled up into one person. He's also a great example of how to live your life: watch how he treats employees. Watch how they care.
At one point in the chat, Thiry also dismisses the idea of tension between a successful, capitalist healthcare enterprise (that rewards shareholders with profits) and an enterprise that benefits patients, insurers, and the world. He focused on ways to create so much value that the tension entirely disappears because everyone wins.
Thiry, now retired, passed the baton to COO Javier Rodriguez, his right hand man of many years who shares the same values.
For years, and even under Rodriguez today, the company doesn't begin its quarterly earnings calls by talking about profits, the economy, strategy, etc. They begin with a piece of data about how they've recently improved the patients' lives or reduced the payers' costs.
It turns out, this is actually the lynchpin of the entire moat and business model.
It took me a month to find the all evidence and understand, but it's painfully simple: DaVita makes ESKD patients healthier than anyone else does, so they live longer, healthier, happier lives. At the same time, the fact they're healthier means they cost the insurers and governments less money. DaVita then negotiates a piece of the cost savings, and that's the excess return on capital shareholders earn.
Thanks.

Please send email to your local rep to reauthorize and refund the Dr. Lorna Breen Health Care Provider Protection Act.
https://lnkd.in/eBeNJGjb
The Dr. Lorna Breen Health Care Provider Protection Act is landmark legislation supporting health workers’ mental health and well-being. Since its passage in 2022, the Lorna Breen Act has funded $103 million across 44 organizations to implement evidence-informed strategies that reduce and prevent suicide, burnout, mental health conditions, and substance use disorders. This legislation has also created the Impact Wellbeing™ national campaign, which gives hospital leaders evidence-informed solutions to reduce health worker burnout, sustain well-being, and build a system where health workers thrive.
Now, we must call on legislators to reauthorize and renew funding for the Dr. Lorna Breen Health Care Provider Protection Act in 2024 to ensure our healthcare workforce can receive the support they need. The Lorna Breen Act is a lifeline for health workers, offering resources to address the mental health challenges they face. In addition to widening its reach to more hospitals, the reauthorization of the Lorna Breen Act also renews focus on reducing administrative burden for health workers everywhere.
This critical legislation is not just a matter of policy; it’s a critical piece of the health delivery supply chain that benefits not only health workers, but everyone who will require medical care in their lifetime.
I am enjoying the habit of boosting examples of leadership in action. Perhaps I should use it as a feature in the upcoming newsletter- Words can influence minds but actions build the future. Cheers to a brighter future in cancer care.
Breaking News! Great news for Irvine & Santa Ana CA residents and oncology professionals. A new facility is coming to the southern CA region, bringing care options closer to home. Residents, healthcare leaders, and market stats all suggest that this is exactly what the area needs.
For those living in the area, this means better options for care nearer to you, without having to drive over an hour for the type of doctor you need. Bringing top-notch care options closer to residents is critical to access and changes how many will experience treatment in the area. It means less cost to patients who travel out of town and pay for overnight stays. It means actually getting the care you deserve for those who are not able to overcome geographical and financial barriers to care in their region.
For those working in rad-onc or planning to, and are from the area, you are getting a brand new facility as an option for your career. You can reconsider having to move away from your relatives to get the best job in your field. A trusted name and the best minds in the field are now in your backyard. This will drive oncology professionals to the region for better cost of living, housing, and research opportunities.
Thank you to everyone involved in bringing care options closer to the southern CA region in Irvine. Let's celebrate better options for care and career opportunities for oncology workers. #Irvine#SantaAna#healthcare#oncology#careeropportunities#newfacility#healthcaretechnicalstaffing
Chief Executive and Chief Clinical Operating Officer - City of Hope
Today, leaders from across the City of Hope system came together to launch the activation of our new and upcoming Irvine Hospital. It was a historic day as we plan for our second academic hospital in Southern California.
Toward the end of the session leaders Annette Walker, Wendy Austin, Annette Morgan, M.B.A., Laura Grant, Dr. Ed Kim and I - took questions from the audience. At the start of the Q&A, there was silence for almost a minute as scores of leaders took their phones out and began taking pictures of the panel. Here is the moment Ed and I realized the audience was actually scanning the bar code above our heads in order to submit their questions - not taking a picture. Our influencer moment quickly evaporated!
Thank you to all our leaders who participated. This will be an exceptional journey as we open a world class hospital in Irvine. Your talent, compassion and focus will lead to a place of healing like no other.
