In part 5/5 of our podcast series on our Crisis Coordination Unit, currently focusing on Sudan, colleagues Sara Abbas and Rania Amin discuss the very real challenges facing the unit. Beyond the bigger problems are the (ostensibly) smaller ones we often take for granted such as contacting our in-country researcher (who is doing an INCREDIBLE job btw) who hasn't had electricity in his neigbourhood since April 15th but somehow manages to charge his phone every day. #podcast #humanitarianresponse #challenges

Poet • Writer • Spoken Word Artist • Community Development • I see poetry as a means of self and collective expression and believe words have transformative power. Get in touch about how we can collaborate.
‘How do we engage genuinely and what’s at stake when we don’t?’ This question was in the caption of a Liz Artistry's instagram post about Sudan (see it here: https://lnkd.in/eqSKQ85q ) In the same caption they referenced a "must listen" conversation between Sara Al-Hassan ( @bsonblast ) & Ayman Makarem ( @politically_depressed podcast https://lnkd.in/e8F--Rnm ) I listened to the podcast for two reasons: 1) When reposting/sharing (especially stuff on my profile), if there is referenced/supporting material i.e. podcast ep., article etc., I want (as much as possible) to have read/listened/watched said material for myself. 2) The 1st part of this question ‘How do we engage genuinely and what’s at stake when we don’t?' is a question (if you exchange 'effectively’ for ‘genuinely’) that I’ve asked myself at different points over the last few years. Currently it is one that is often applied to how I respond to what’s happening in Sudan, Congo, Palestine and beyond. —As well as in relation to matters of injustice on UK shores. I found the entire conversation interesting and it could easily require more than a 2nd listen. The excerpt I have shared touches specifically on the matter of engagement, which is why I chose it. #KeepEyesOnSudan

Mike Abel asked me, " What is a conversation we're not having with South Africa right now?". My immediate response was, "What am I doing to be part of the solution?". It's easy to be a couch critic and talk about what our leaders should be doing, and while there is accountability to be had, we are citizens and not victims. As active participants in our reality, we need to have the courage to be more involved. After all, Ubuntu is about serving the collective and not the individual. As we head into elections in 20 days, I leave you with these questions: What are you doing to be a part of the solution? What does active citizenry mean to you? If you'd like to listen to my full conversation with Mike, listen to his podcast Willing & Abel Podcast.

Dear friends and colleagues from abroad, thank you for reaching out, conveying your concerns, and praying. We need your support. Our catastrophe is indeed all over the news, but the articles could be quite lengthy, and the horrific videos may feel too monstrous to watch. So if you prefer podcasts as I do, here are links to today's New York Times and The Economist podcasts released 1-2 hours ago explaining what you need to know: https://lnkd.in/dM2G6WEM https://lnkd.in/dGRSUmwa

→ Each year, about 2,000 to 3,000 Armenians from the Diaspora migrate to Armenia, and around 1,000 of them plan to establish long-term residency in the country. What impact are they aiming to make, and does it align with the nation's actual needs? In this episode of the DemSecurity Podcast, former Vice-Minister for Diaspora, Babken DerGrigorian, discusses the differing perceptions within the Diasporan community. He emphasizes the need to closely follow the country's realities to understand its needs and make a meaningful impact in the country. ↓ Listen to the full episode on our Youtube channel at https://lnkd.in/eYgyaRji

🤔 A Dream for African Philanthropy 🤔 There are 160 million Africans in the Diaspora who are the largest financier in Africa. In 2021, about $95 billion in remittances came from the diaspora compared to 35 billion from overseas development aid. There is so much untapped potential in the African Diaspora. The question: How do we harness this potential to further develop the continent? Listen to our eye-opening conversation with Samuel Oji Oti on Apple Podcast, YouTube, Spotify, Google Podcast, and on most podcast apps. https://lnkd.in/ggK55-62

ICYMI 🎯 Gaza has shown that when conflict is inaccessible or ignored, it’s evidence from people on the ground that helps to show its scale and call our attention. These often graphic images flooding social media are part of the calls for accountability. But detailed tracking of individual casualties also makes sure people’s suffering doesn’t go unrecognised. Business leaders must focus on what’s happening in the Middle East right now - and considering the lessons they can learn, including how to talk to their teams about it. These Masters of Scale episodes hosted by Bob Safian are outstanding and an invaluable resource.
I’ve hosted 175 podcast episodes over the last 3 years, from Covid to Ukraine, Airbnb to Verizon But nothing I’m prouder of — and more conflicted about — than the 3 episodes in the last 2 weeks: on the ground in Israel; in support of Palestinian & Israeli biz collaboration; and voices from inside Gaza. I hope you’ll listen to the full series and reflect on those in pain and danger on both sides. There are business lessons (of course), but more important are the human lessons - about empathy, resilience, patience, calm. I don’t have a resolution to the crisis, but I’m sure that if we all strive to achieve those principles, our world will be a more humane, generous, forgiving place. Thanks to Maayan Cohen at Hello Heart, Daniel Lubetzky 🇺🇦 at KIND, Arnaud Quemin and the team at Mercy Corps for making it all possible.
