Today we're bringing together our colleagues and research partners as part of EI's #CellularGenomics Strategic Programme, for an annual all-hands meeting, marking the first year of the research programme. The cell is the fundamental unit of #biology. Within multicellular organisms - whether plant, animal, or human - cells can display enormous functional diversity. This diversity exists both between tissues but also within the same tissues, highlighting distinct roles that, together, underpin overall health and development. Although #genomic (or somatic) variation between cells of an organism has often been associated with disorders and diseases - for example, it is a hallmark of cancers - it is a phenomenon that occurs naturally in healthy cells and is fundamental to normal development and in reacting to the environment. Cellular Genomics builds on the Earlham Institute's expertise in #datascience, #bioinformatics, and #singlecell analysis to investigate the impact of genomic and transcriptomic heterogeneity in healthy plants and animals. The programme brings together multidisciplinary expertise from across the Earlham Institute with partners from Sainsbury Laboratory Cambridge University (SLCU), The Alan Turing Institute, and Culture Collections. Had a wonderful time at the Human and Mammalian Genetics and Genomics: 64th McKusick Short Course at The Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, ME, USA. I learned so much over the two weeks I spent there from amazing scientists from all over the globe and I made some great connections. Additionally, I earned 1st Place Poster Prize during the trainee poster session on July 20th. The poster I presented is a compilation of the figures that will comprise my first first-author manuscript, which I am actively putting together for submission. I consider myself extraordinarily lucky to pursue higher education and be a life-long learner in such an incredible field. #genetic #genomics #traininganddevelopment #sciencecommunication #rarediseaseresearch

On National DNA Day, we celebrate the remarkable discovery of the Human Genome Project and the 50th anniversary of the discovery of the double helix structure of DNA by James Watson and Francis Crick in 1953, a breakthrough that revolutionized our understanding of genetics and paved the way for countless advancements in science and medicine. At HiGenoMB, we honor this historic milestone and the ongoing journey of discovery in genomics and molecular biology. National DNA Day is a reminder of the incredible potential of DNA research to unlock new insights into health, disease, and the fundamental mechanisms of life itself. As we commemorate National DNA Day, HiGenoMB extends its warmest wishes to all researchers, scientists, and enthusiasts who are dedicated to unraveling the mysteries encoded within the DNA molecule. May this day inspire continued innovation and collaboration in the field of genomics, leading to transformative discoveries that benefit society. #nationalDNAday #genomics #molecularbiology #HiGenoMBWishes #biotechnology #DNAhistory #geneticdiscovery #DNArevolution #genomicsInnovation #HiGenoMBwishes #geneticresearch #DNAAdvancements #celebratingDNA #HiGenoMB

🌟 Day 1 at the European Society of Human Genetics Conference 2024 #ESHG2024 in Berlin was incredible! Joined by my colleague Zeynep Karagöz, we were captivated by Nobel Laureate Svante Pääbo's talk on "A Historical Perspective on Disease Risk in Paleogenomics." His insights into the Neanderthal genome and its relevance to modern diseases were fascinating. We also enjoyed engaging corporate satellites by QIAGEN and Genomize. Exploring the massive exhibition hall was a highlight, where we connected with companies working on everything from microbial sequencing (Zymo Research Corp) to diagnostic software with augmented intelligence (SimulConsult, INC.!). Despite clocking in 15,000 steps at the CityCube, we only scratched the surface. Now, on to Day 2! We're eager to attend more inspiring talks and delve into the latest research at the poster sessions. Stay tuned for more updates! 🚀🔬 If you're here and want to learn about Open-Source tools and how The Hyve can help deliver meaningful research outcomes using open science, please ping me, and I'll come find you. #ESHG2024 #Genetics #Innovation #OpenScience #OpenSource
