When schools are just starting up, they often feel an urgency about opening their doors. As school facility expert Jon Dahlberg puts it: "I just need to get open!" Jon says, you have to consider your school's mission and values and ask yourself, "Does this building match what our school needs?" Does your #school need a dance room, science lab, or indoor basketball court? What does your school need to operate, and what do your kids need to thrive? Start there. The Congressional Historic Stadium Caucus has just been launched with a mission to preserve and modernize cherished historic college football stadiums across the United States. They've set their sights on 18 legendary stadiums, some of which have witnessed football history for over a century. As part of the renovation planning process, maintaining optimum conditions for fans, athletes and play of the game is essential. Wind can impact the direction of a ball or create a tailwind or headwind that either helps or hinders athletes. Likewise, other elements like extreme heat, glare, or even snow and rain can create a negative experience. Our climate and performance engineers work closely with the design team to identify how proposed changes to their stadium will affect the existing microclimate, as well as providing solutions to overcome any issues. Being competitive on the field of play begins in the locker room. This is true not only for athletes, who increasingly rely on these facilities and their amenities to prepare and train for competition, but also for the schools they represent. High performing athletic facilities are critical to recruiting and producing leading athletic programs. But the arms race of constantly out-performing rivals with newer, cutting-edge facilities is not sustainable, at any level. One approach to keeping a school competitive is pursuing a holistic approach to its locker room facilities. As with any attempt to be all-inclusive, versatility and tailored customization to the school it serves are, of course, key. 🔗 Learn more from GMC Sports Architect Rachel Crafton-Stiver in American School & University Magazine: https://bit.ly/46fJyBz #buildingcommunities #GMCSports #architecture #design #sportsdesign #education

Now that we are down to the finish line on two sites, you will find that there will be supporters and detractors of the site that is chosen. Each site will have its own architectural value, which means you have two totally different experiences based on the physical location of the new stadium. No new stadium ever meets all of the stated architectural goals. It might be facing the wrong way compared to a certain part of the city, it might be too tall, or it may emit too much light. But holistically, it's there to hold tens of thousands of people, get them in and out efficiently, and to create gameplay that leads to economic activity. https://lnkd.in/gUprdvwy

Crafting Interiors That Live | Founder & Chief Visionary for Xperiencemakers - Interior Architecture & Design | TalkAboutSpaces.com
Harnessing the Power of Curves: Neurodesign at Rallim Secondary School Rallim Pre I Prep I Secondary prioritizes student well-being and academic success. At Xperiencemakers we supported this ethos by incorporating evidence-based neurodesign principles into their new Secondary School expansion. Curved forms are a prime example. Research suggests they create a more calming and inviting atmosphere, fostering a sense of safety and security in students. This is particularly important in creative spaces like the Music Pods and Vlog & Podcast rooms (pictured). By incorporating these elements, we've designed a space that not only feels safe and inviting, but also encourages exploration and self-expression. Curved furniture creates a more open and fluid environment, removing the rigidity of straight lines and sharp edges. This can help students feel more relaxed and comfortable to take risks, experiment with ideas, and let their creativity flow freely. These thoughtfully designed spaces foster a sense of ease and informality, making it easier for students to loosen up, collaborate with peers, and develop their creative voices. Stay tuned for more insights into the neurodesign principles at Rallim Secondary School! #interiordesign #education #neurodesign #wellbeing #school #creativity #rallimsecondary For Project Enquiries Contact us: Website: www.xperiencemakers.co.za Email: enquiries@xperiencemakers.co.za Photos by Sally Wellbeloved Photography

Exciting Times are ahead for Brisbane's Construction and Engineering Industry, and there are plenty of opportunities currently on the market for Building Services Engineers. Below is a really interesting article discussing how the regeneration of East London for the 2012 Olympic Games can serve as a model for Brisbane's 2032 Games. For Brisbane, the article suggests that similar lessons can be learned from London's experience. The proposed redevelopment of the Gabba, the completion of underground rail and bus connections, and the impact on the suburb are mentioned as challenges in Brisbane's regeneration efforts. Overall, hosting the Olympics in Brisbane will bring about significant benefits, including urban regeneration, improved transport infrastructure, and the opportunity to rethink housing needs. East London transformed after the 2012 Games, with increased tourism, new cultural institutions, and thriving neighbourhoods. By following London's example, Brisbane has the potential to achieve similar positive outcomes and create a lasting legacy for the city.

Crewe, Royal Arcade update: Next week, councillors will consider options for the next phase of Crewe’s Royal Arcade redevelopment. Factors including double-digit inflation, the cost-of-living crisis, and the government’s decision to scrap HS2 north of Birmingham are placing increasing pressure on the project’s viability. The redevelopment of the Royal Arcade site is part of an ongoing £100m plus town centre regeneration programme, which includes more than 20 projects. Work on phase one of the Royal Arcade scheme – a new bus station and multi-storey car park – is expected to be completed in spring next year. This will provide modern transport facilities for visitors to the town and free up other car parks to allow for further development projects to progress, such as a new state-of-the-art Youth Zone on Oak Street car park. On 14 November, the council’s economy and growth committee will consider a report on the current position and challenges with the delivery of phase two of the scheme – planned to be mixed-use and focused on leisure activities – and puts forward options for the next steps. The primary recommendation is to advance plans for using the site for ‘meanwhile uses’. In Crewe, this could include a new children’s play area, seasonal activities such as a temporary go-karting track, trampoline park, pop-up cinema or ice-skating rink, space for traders to sell food and drink, wildflower areas and outdoor exercise space. Alongside meanwhile uses, the recommendation to committee is to continue exploring other opportunities for funding the original scheme as well as investigate alternative forms of development. For more information: See the comments for examples of 'meanwhile uses' elsewhere.

😮 Wait, you did WHAT at A4LE-Association for Learning Environments' LearningSCAPES?? Who knew that playing a combination of lacrosse, hockey, and basketball while in bumper cars (aka WhirlyBall) existed and is so much fun! 🤩 Conferences are great spaces to be inspired, share ideas, and grow. Our leaders Lyanne Schuster, Nick Stephenson, AIA, ALEP, Kevin Chapin, Joel Williams, and Aaron Jobson attended this year's conference in Chicago to do just that. They also enjoyed teambuilding through some friendly Whirlyball competition and bonded while exploring the city! QKA was proud to have 5 names listed on the Southwest Region ALEP roster this year. "The sessions were great but the tours were definitely the highlight!" our Director of Design, Eddie said recalling the opportunity to tour the Crow Island School. Studio Lead Joel shared, "The session that had the biggest impact on me was one about Inclusive Restrooms. Since returning from the conference I’ve already used the information I learned." For Principal and Studio Lead Lyanne, she attended a session that strengthened her belief in the importance of outdoor spaces in education. "The idea that education spaces (and their design) don’t stop at the door and need as much integration between inside and outside as possible. Part of the vision is that architecture and landscape are one, with outdoors as important as indoors." Partnered with Irene Nigaglioni, President of IN2 Architecture; Craig Schiller, Executive Director for The Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS), QKA's President & CEO Aaron presented on the key components of high performance school, how CHPS criteria contributes to providing high quality learning environments, and more.
