#Juneteenth commemorates the news of emancipation finally reaching and freeing enslaved people in Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865. While we’re honoring and reflecting on the importance of this day, we also stand firm on our commitment to continue to end injustices.

Consumer Housing Advocate/Industry Advisor ⚜️ "Get's it". Done. Consumer advocacy for sustainable, national housing policy reform.
My #housing #politics on display. If you want to understand them. Simply watch the movie. My Father’s family owns a public utility in a #smalltown in Southern Illinois. A notorious #Republican stronghold in #Democratic #Illinois. Everyone whose #family is from the town - grows up with the Town - regardless of whether or not they actually grew up IN it. I did both. My first house no longer exists. The town the #house was in, no longer exists. It was washed into the Mississippi River in a flood. 🌊 To afford it, my parents both worked. My Dad worked in the stockyards in East St. Louis. My Mom was a teacher in Cahokia, Illinois in the late 60s when the Black Panthers were on site - affording her protection. I do not believe in the trafficking of human beings, the trafficking of their misery, or trafficking the ideologies of any man. Where my housing is concerned I will apply only these labels. A #human. An #American. A #winner. If I take on the label of either a Republican or a Democrat in the world of housing I am assured a loss - to be on the losing end - and a #loser some percentage of the time. It means others are losing some percentage of the time as well. All human beings. Some of those human beings cannot afford to take the loss. Their lives might even depend upon it. Where housing policy is concerned I reject the constraints of yours, theirs, and mine labels. I will run it right down the middle. Pulling whatever levers I need to - to win. On behalf of America. While others are busy squabbling over the ownership of “thoughts” and “ideologies” and “humans”. I choose to protect the homeownership of all Americans. Proving to you, IN PLAIN SIGHT, OVER your objections - that you can’t own people and or their “leading-thoughts”. Just land and chattel. Which is the same thing in Monroe County as 40 acres and cattle. You never count your money. When you’re sitting at the table. There’ll be time enough for countin’. When the dealin’s done. Get it. Housing is a human agenda. https://lnkd.in/dpYWY6gQ

I should have edited this video. It's long. There is an awkward pause. And another one. I'm not as good with my words here. That's okay. I'm talking about race. And that's uncomfortable. I grew up in Idaho. Everyone looked like me. I looked like everybody. We didn't talk about diversity or race. Because why would we? If we did, I don't recall any champions for justice. I had a LOT to learn. Like this: while we celebrate Juneteenth, the 13th amendment abolished slavery in 1862. By design, it took 2 ½ years for news to reach the last slaves in Galveston, Texas. On June 19th, 1865. Not even justice was justly delivered. The sacrifice and suffering originating from American slavery is a stain on our history. It has been replaced with systemic, structural racism that persists. Especially in real estate. We can make a difference here. The future is ours to advance a more just and equitable future. It’s one thing to reflect and learn. It’s another to act. It's the work of individuals and business leaders to insist on change, then make it. It's my work. 🌟Journey of Courage and Truth: My Story of Resilience🌟 At 44, I've found the courage to share a story I've hidden for decades. As one of the twelve girls at the Coke County Juvenile Justice Center in the '90s, my journey has been one of pain, silence, and eventual empowerment. This story isn't just mine. It's about Sara Lowe and many others who suffered in silence. Lured by promises of rehabilitation at Wackenhut's facility, we faced a reality far from what was pledged. Abuse, neglect, and a system that turned a blind eye - this was our truth. I was silenced once with money at 19, but the temporary glamour of wealth quickly faded, leaving me to confront the deeper scars of my experience. The loss of my best friend, who named my daughter, to suicide on the day of our lawsuit victory, was a turning point. It underscored a harsh reality: our fight was never about money; it was about justice and acknowledgment. Today, I stand to tell our story, not just for me but for Sara, who tragically couldn't bear the weight of her unacknowledged pain. It's a reminder that behind every corporate facade, there are human lives at stake. And while those responsible may not have faced consequences, our voices can now be heard. This post is more than a narrative of past woes; it's a call for accountability, change, and the protection of the innocent. Let's ensure no other child endures what we did. So when people think I’m absolutely bananas for saying I want to build a $200 million dollar theme park in Texas question my leverage, here you go. 💅🏼 I don’t think anybody wants me to make a big fuss about this, and I’m not trying to. I’m pretty sure I’m not gonna have any problems getting it done. 🤠 https://lnkd.in/gSd9e_Gi https://lnkd.in/gWFsrNkF #JusticeForSara #SurvivorStory #SpeakUp #Accountability #TexasYouthCommission #Wackenhut #Texas #juvenilejustice #TYC

Here's the next installment of the Cleveland Plain Dealer's Civil Discourse initiative. This one provides a great overview of the impact of gerrymandering in Ohio. Gerrymandering is a huge problem for both red and blue states and greatly impacts the effectiveness of our democracy. #SpeakUp #goodgovernment #goodgov https://lnkd.in/evwKe3cU

👏 great step forward for these nine communities! Locking up kids is never the answer. Time to pursue alternative, proven policy solutions.Time to put the wellbeing of children first. Find out more about our evidence-based framework for child wellbeing at www.aracy.org.au
Huge news! We've announced nine communities that will benefit from the largest commitment to justice reinvestment ever delivered by the commonwealth. Justice reinvestment is a long-term, community-led approach to preventing crime, improving community safety and reducing the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults and children in custody. It empowers First Nations communities and leaders to develop local solutions to divert people who are at risk away from the criminal justice system. We're committed to working in partnership with communities, because we know lasting change needs to be community-led. This is just one way that we're delivering practical action that makes a difference in Indigenous communities.

Tomorrow, on September 30, we are honoring a momentous occasion - Truth and Reconciliation Day. It started in 2013 when Orange Shirt Day was started by Phyllis Webstad to honor survivors of residential schools. Orange Shirt Day on September 30 marks the day when many Indigenous children were taken from their families and into residential schools; now, it is an opportunity to bring awareness and create meaningful discussions around the intergenerational effects of residential schools. The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is our opportunity to reflect, grow, and heal as we acknowledge the past, embrace the present, and shape a brighter future together. #TruthAndReconciliation #EveryChildMatters #IndigenousLivesMatter
