Question: Do you know who Australia’s Head of State is? Answer: King Charles III We had some fun on ‘The Jury’ on Sky News Australia this week talking about Australia’s Head of State and Australian Republic. Only trouble was, we ran into a major hurdle - head of the monarchists, Eric Abetz tried to pretend that King Charles is not Australia’s Head of State! Even producing the appropriate clause in the Constitution wasn’t enough. Truthfully, it wasn’t a suprise. Attempts to avoid conversation about the monarchy’s suitability to represent contemporary Australia are understandable, since over 75% of Australians believe that Charles does not represent us, or our culture. Nonetheless, as I pointed out on the show, our intention is not to demonise Charles, or Australians who love the monarchy. Quite the opposite. We want to be honest but respectful of our history and all those who have contributed. We’re all Australians and can all work together to find the right path to our full independence as a country and will continue to let all Aussies know, we respect you and your views. Yes, including Eric. It’s less about Charles, and all about us. In future though, perhaps we can ground the conversation in reality, and stick to the book called the Australian Constitution?

What “culture” are you arguing for Craig Foster AM ? According to your regime, there is no Australian culture proper, just seperate minorities competing for an arbitrary ideal. The Crown is precisely what unites the diversity of culture (by a mere thread) in this country and other Commonwealth nations. There is a pervading anti-nationalist sentiment being promoted and adopted in the country thanks to public figures like you, consequently, assuming an already dismantled national identity. A “democratically” elected head-of-state is hardly going to magically invoke a sense of nationhood. On the contrary, Republicanism is simply ‘kicking the can’ further down the road into cultural oblivion because its ‘well-meaning’ ideology is built upon a fractured cultural foundation.

THE FALKLANDS WAR: A LESSON IN COMMUNICATION In April 1982, Britain and Argentina clashed over control of the Falkland Islands, a conflict that became known as the Falklands War. Liechtenstein is one of the last remaining ‘absolute’ monarchies in the world, a fact that becomes even more evident as it stands in stark contrast with the general tendency of monarchies to move towards a parliamentarian prevalence. Instead, this tiny principality, nestled between Switzerland and Austria, has granted its Sovereign Prince increasing powers as late as 2003, with another referendum being called in 2012 that vehemently rejected the possibility of cutting back or limiting the powers of the Sovereign Prince.   As a result, the Prince of Liechtenstein has political powers that modern-day monarchs can only have read about in their ancestors’ biographies. Prince Hans-Adam, the current ruler of Liechtenstein, can take political decisions and weigh in on current events in the country.

Establishing the Dominions of the British Empire The Balfour Declaration of 1926, issued by the 1926 Imperial Conference of British Empire leaders in London, was named after Arthur Balfour, who was Lord President of the Council. It declared the United Kingdom and the Dominions to be: ... autonomous Communities within the British Empire, equal in status, in no way subordinate one to another in any aspect of their domestic or external affairs, though united by a common allegiance to the Crown, and freely associated as members of the British Commonwealth of Nations. (Picture below) The Inter-Imperial Relations Committee, chaired by Balfour, drew up the document preparatory to its unanimous approval by the imperial prime ministers on 15 November 1926. It was first proposed by South African Prime Minister J. B. M. Hertzog and Canadian Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King. Arthur Balfour, Earl of Balfour The declaration accepted the growing political and diplomatic independence of the Dominions in the years after World War I. It also recommended that the governors-general, the representatives of the King in each dominion, should no longer also serve automatically as the representative of the British government in diplomatic relations between the countries. In following years, high commissioners were gradually appointed, whose duties were soon recognised to be virtually identical to those of an ambassador. The first such British high commissioner was appointed to Canada in 1928. The conclusions of the Imperial Conference of 1926 were re-stated by the 1930 conference and incorporated in the Statute of Westminster of December 1931. In the statute, the British Parliament provided that it would not enact a law which applied to a Dominion as part of the law of that Dominion, unless the law expressly stated that the Dominion government had requested and consented to the enactment of that law.
