Today is Curtis “Freebie Fridays”! Where I give a perspective and knowledge based on my 25 years( ok maybe a bit more ) as a senior executive, if anyone cares. Today and for next few weeks, I’m talking about the top 5 things brands can do to remain in control and relevant, starting with number 5. I can’t go anywhere these days without seeing 2-3 people wearing On Running sneakers, congrats 🤙🏾🥂. However I couldn’t help but to think, is this going to be another case of a brand that got hot, chased Wall Street and in two years their supply will crush the demand for the product. Now having said that, we have seen this story many times before across industries. So I’m coming to my number 5 tip for companies /brands to stay relevant to your consumer. Innovation, but more so, innovation with a purpose. I meet with alot of owners and brands now In the CPG or appeal/footwear worlds and I hear alot, my product isn’t selling as it use to but I have alot of inventory, etc… Now that will come up later, stay tuned for another Freebie Friday talk. However, getting back on this topic, I always say you have to innovate and more importantly, give your consumer what they need, not what they want right now. Simply put as we know shoes and apparel are not like fine wine, except for Jordan 1’s. Over my career, I have seen so many brands from high fashion to luxury to lifestyle brands make this mistake ( and in more than a few cases I had to come in and clean this up ), holding on to a product too long, not invest in innovative concepts and misreading the consumer. Consumers don’t sit around and wait for you and they will get bored. The key is to keep your consumers engaged in your brand and show your ability to be one step ahead of them, even if your retail partners and teams don’t want to.. Innovation with a purpose is our number 5 key.. Brands get this first step down and you will Be on the road to sticking around for a while.
