The mental and physical wellbeing of our ISS Placemakers around the world is a key priority at all times and in all places. On November 19th, International Men’s Day shines a light on male health issues, including mental wellbeing, prostate and testicular cancer, and suicide prevention. Throughout the month, many ISS Placemakers will unite to ‘grow a mo’ as part of the Movember campaign to raise awareness and funds for men’s health. Starting conversations with colleagues who are struggling can feel daunting, but checking in with each other and opening up can make the world of difference. Open conversation about the struggles of life are becoming more acceptable every day and I, for one, enjoy the opportunity to hear about people's journeys and grow the bonds we call friendship. Over that last few years my relationship with healthcare has changed dramatically. I have watched family, friends, coworkers and teammates battle with the myriad diseases we know as cancer. I now call myself a member of this group. I have found that the community nobody ever wants to join is strong, resilient and extremely supportive. I want to start giving back in a meaningful way, so I am using the connections I have cultivated over the years as a platform to speak from. My ask to all who read this: Please don't put off management of your physical and mental health. Get your recommended screenings, be proactive with your healthcare providers and be your own advocate for your health and well-being. There are many competing priorities for our time and headspace; let your health be top priority.

Master the art of saying NO Feeling stressed by the demands of daily life? If you have too much on your plate or are consumed by a busy schedule, you may be saying yes too much. It's time to start saying no, and then sticking to it. Discover tips and tricks for getting back to a saner schedule — no guilt, no hard feelings. When it comes to taming stress, you have more power than you think. • Focus on what matters. Before you commit, consider how the request fits (or not) with your priorities. • Weigh the yes-to-stress ratio. Volunteering a batch of cookies is quick versus heading up a fundraising committee for months. • Nix the guilt. It's never a good reason to say yes. You'll likely end up feeling resentful and more stressed. • Cut to the chase. Briefly explain why you're saying no. But there's no need to elaborate or make up excuses. • Hit replay if you need to. You may need to refuse the request a few times before the other person accepts it. For #followfriday this week, we wanted to do something a little different to align with International Men’s day and signpost to the Men’s Health Forum. It is an online resource visited by more than 1 million men a year for men’s health information. We know that suicide rates are disproportionately impacting men, and that many men are failing to ask for help when they need it, whether that be for their mental or physical health. We feel it is important to challenge the taboos around asking for help, and we wanted to ensure more men know about different resources that are available to them. Thousands of men use their online chat services for advice and hundreds of organisations partner with them every year for Men’s Health Week. Not only do they help individuals online, they help national health providers improve their services to men (for example, they successfully persuaded the NHS that the National Diabetes Prevention Programme should target men in their national plan). They also train hundreds of men and health professionals in how to improve men’s health. They’ve had a huge impact; they’ve changed men’s health from being about genito-urinary problems to looking at all aspects of men’s mental and physical well-being. They helped win AAA screening for men at 65 (preventing around 2,000 premature deaths a year) and have distributed more than 1,000,000 Man Manuals to men. It’s an amazing resource and so accessible, and we hope that by highlighting it this week that even more men will use it and support the work they do. In this community, we talk a lot about the "patient perspective" and "sharing our stories" but why is that important? Because 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙞𝙨 𝙨𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙬𝙝𝙤 𝙣𝙚𝙚𝙙𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙝𝙚𝙖𝙧 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙮 𝙧𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙣𝙤𝙬. We know so many of our members have powerful stories of resilience, innovation, determination, vulnerability, bravery, and perseverance. You may have gotten through what someone else is going through right now, and they need to know that they're going to get through it too. In past years during #HPNAwarenessWeek, we tried to collect videos and messages from as many members as we could to try to show the world how incredible you all are, but there's so many of you out there, there was no way we could share them all. Until now. With your help. We want to hear YOUR story, about nutrition support, #HPN, Oley, resilience, advocacy, community, grief, bravery. Share. Your. Story. Using the hashtag #MyOleyStory post a message, a video, a photo, a piece of art, a poem, anything you want, to YOUR Facebook or Instagram and share your story with us and more importantly, with someone who may need to hear it. We'll still do our best to share as many as we can, but by using #MyOleyStory we can search that hashtag on the different platforms and hear your stories long after #HPNAwarenessWeek is over.

Let's appreciate the strength of arthritis patients and consider how to improve their lives. We can start by spreading awareness, offering a helping hand, and being patient with them. Creating a supportive environment with accessible spaces is crucial, and encouraging suitable physical activities can enhance joint flexibility. A balanced diet rich in anti-inflammatory foods and access to emotional support and counseling can contribute to their well-being. Proper medication management is essential, and community engagement fosters a sense of belonging. Supporting research and innovations in arthritis treatment is also vital to make a positive impact.
