When I entered the corporate world many years back, one thing became very clear to me early on... I wasn't prepared for the onslaught of what I encountered during my initial foray into the industry at Barclays Investment Bank. Where do you learn the following? -           How to contend with office politics -           How to navigate organizational hierarchy effectively -           What to do when you don't see eye to eye with your manager -           How to build your brand in the workplace so you can be noticed -           How to prepare appropriately for performance reviews As much as I loved my experience at Questrom School of Business, Boston University, this was not part of the curriculum nor taught when I was onboarded at Barclays. The reality is that you learn things the hard way while on the job. It took me many years to learn and adapt, but I wish I had someone or resources to help me navigate all this when I began my career. To that end, Kasia Siwosz and I are taking our 35 years of experience in the investment banking space and pouring all our knowledge into learning experiences to help serve the next generation of Wall Streeters for a more seamless assimilation to an ultra-competitive industry. 5 Years of Growth 🌱 Celebrating My Anniversary at Bank of America 📱 One of the first things I did when I moved to Dallas for a new job at Bank of America was buy a plant. The grandeur of a Birds of Paradise plant always captivated me, so naturally, I brought one into my new home. Little did I know, this decision would teach me profound lessons about nurturing and maturity. Reflecting on my journey over the past five years at Bank of America, I can’t help but draw parallels to the resilience and growth of a Bird of Paradise plant. Much like caring for this living thing, my career demanded constant attention and curiosity to thrive. I’ve strived to understand what delightful customer experiences mean, to explore the investment of equity into digital roadmaps and tools, and define what boundaries really are … and most importantly, for whom they were meant for and why. (It’s been fun to push the limits of the latter) But the reality of it all is, the true essence of my career growth lies in the support and lessons from my colleagues, leaders, mentors and friends: • nothing is a team of 1 • your first impression will be biased • work on yourself first • if you want to be a leader, lead • ask better questions • have the audacity to dream • say “I don’t know” often - this, I have learned from my brother, Roque S. Mine has been the pursuit of Access by unearthing the roots of inequality in our systems and structures, and fostering a more equitable society. Every day, I am inspired by the boundless potential of empathetic individuals and the evolving landscape of technology - y ahora with the the rapid pace of innovation, we are presented with an incredible opportunity to be curious once again. Gracias for the patience as I learn, not only in my career and these ever-evolving technologies, but also as I re-discover, yet again and again, my role within them. It is our team's first hackathon at Wells Fargo. We initially participated as colleagues but eventually became much more than that. Throughout the event, we engaged in discussions, collaborated closely, explored new ideas, pushed each other to excel, learned valuable lessons, built strong relationships, and ultimately celebrated our accomplishments with a successful submission. In the midst of late nights, endless coffee mugs, meetings, and the continuous enhancement of both technical and interpersonal skills, we came to realize that the hackathon was not just a competition but also a transformative experience. It showed us that we are capable of achieving much more than we had imagined, both individually and collectively. I am grateful to be part of a team where: - Dedication and teamwork are valued and demonstrated. - Learning and growth are continuous and encouraged. - Challenges are opportunities to innovate and excel. - Success is celebrated together, fostering a sense of camaraderie and achievement.
