What Determines Victory? Tech or Tactics? This year’s Robocon Hong Kong Contest drew over 200 students from eight local universities and tertiary institutions to the Park, putting their engineering skills, AI computing and teamwork to a fierce test. Themed “Harvest Day”, this year’s competition takes inspiration from the cultivation of terraced fields in Vietnam. This year’s game rules took it up a notch. With fully automated robots as a requirement, the teams must up their game by integrating multiple AI models on computer vision and machine learning to win the game. Congratulations to the champion - Wonder Seed team from The Chinese University of Hong Kong! A total success from the seamless coordination between talent and robot, together with strategic teamwork. The team will represent Hong Kong at the Asia-Pacific Robocon (ABU Robocon) finals in Vietnam – all the best! One more RUN.EU - European University international program has come to an end, and this was enriching and particularly in line with my personal interests! This time, the experience was The Youth Exchange School “AI for a Sustainable Future” and took place in the FHV - Vorarlberg University of Applied Sciences, Dornbirn, where students from all around Europe have been discussing AI-based use cases with the objective of achieving a better future. We aimed to brainstorm on a problem-solving approach and pitch an innovative idea that allied AI to a society's existing issue. Along with workshops and amazing lectures on the applicability of intelligent systems on products and services, which shared valuable insights from the local lecturers’ experiences. With Dániel Doma, Daniel Leonard, Tibor Makky, José Oliveira, and Helder Rodrigues, we ended up developing an idea to “make cities more liveable” by designing an AI Traffic Light System using mainly computer vision to reduce the waiting time and increase safety. ➡️ We came to this issue because traffic light duration is never accurate: whether pedestrians wait a lot of time for the green light, they do not have enough time to cross the street, or drivers would have to stop because the red light turned on without the need, and they would have to wait too much time on the traffic lights. ➡️ Our solution was to develop an AI system that detects people, movement and sounds to make the traffic lights as efficient as possible and increase safety. ✅ It would be useful for everyone but especially for drivers and people with reduced mobility! It was an inspiring experience to meet such a cold country with harm people surrounded by snowing mountains. Congrats, Florian Buehler, for the amazing program that exceeded my expectations. #RUNEU #YESAI #AI #AISustainability #SmartCities

Jidokai recently secured 🥈 place at our succesful Demo Day, showcasing their ingenious system for monitoring industrial electric motors. Watch their pitch video to find out more about Moritz Benningers vision. https://lnkd.in/e3igrtZg 🏆 Effortlessly tracking fault conditions in both electrical and mechanical aspects, the system autonomously adapts parameters to specific motors through a verified framework, simulating currents in healthy and faulty states. The result? A trained neural network that evaluates real measured currents, classifying the motor's condition with unmatched precision. This technology is a game-changer for manufacturing companies, offering effective monitoring and maintenance for numerous electric motors used in pumps and processing machines. Don't miss the chance to see the future of industrial motor monitoring unfold. #monitoring #AI #Innovation #TalentAcquisition #Startup #NetworkAccelerator Cansu Cak Carolin Bischop Thomas Hipp Chelina Höning Helena Dittrich Thomas Prexl Thomas Neumann Clara Müller-Wirth Dr. Raoul Haschke Dr. Andreas Weber André H.R. Awesome research alert! Weijia Cai and Lei Huang from the #ICONLab at #UBC developed a goal oriented exploration method, dubbed RoboAuditor, for automated detection of energy intensive objects indoors using robots. We will present our work next month at #buildsys2023 in Turkiye. In this work, we take only natural language inputs from human to set exploration goals for the robot. We calculate a revenue value that combines the traditional frontier based exploration with likely goal directions inferred using pretrained vision language models. The exploration method requires no training for any new objects you want to detect. It was tested in 12 residential environments in Habitat, and we are conducting real robot tests at UBC right now! So next time when you are thinking about automated energy auditing, ask the RoboAuditor around the block! Check out the video below.

🔬Depth Anything, an innovative approach by researchers from the University of Hong Kong/TikTok. Leveraging the DPT model combined with a DINOv2 backbone, this model excels in zero-shot relative depth estimation, outperforming previous benchmarks like MiDaS v3.1 and ZoeDepth. 🚀 Its groundbreaking "data engine" automatically annotates a massive dataset of 62 million images, addressing the challenge of large, accurately labeled datasets in machine learning. This widens its ability to generalize across various scenes and lighting conditions, reducing generalization errors and enhancing depth prediction accuracy. 💡 Depth Anything represents a leap forward in computer vision, particularly in tasks requiring precise depth estimation from single images. #DepthEstimation #ComputerVision #MachineLearning #ArtificialIntelligence #AIResearch #DeepLearning #TechNews #DataScience 🌐

Welcome to read our NEW work Yang, M., Li, J., Feng, L., Chen, S.-C. and Tseng, M.-L. (2024), "Service robot anthropomorphism on consumer usage intention: curvilinear and linear effect", Industrial Management & Data Systems, Vol. 124 No. 2, pp. 612-639. https://lnkd.in/gc9t5Zcv Abstract Purpose This research proposes and examines a theoretical model grounded in anthropomorphism theory considering the curvilinear and linear relationships between service robot anthropomorphism and consumer usage intention and explores the mediating effect of perceived risk. Design/methodology/approach To examine the developed model, two complementary studies are designed. In Study 1, multi-time data of 511 participants show that service robot anthropomorphism inverts U-shaped (curvilinear) relationship on consumer usage intention and perceived risk mediates this curvilinear relationship. In Study 2, multi-source data of 460 volunteers are used to confirm the findings of Study 1 and examine that consumer empathy moderates the complex nonlinear effect of service robot anthropomorphism on perceived risk, and the indirect curvilinear effect of service robot anthropomorphism on consumer usage intention through perceived risk. Findings This research provides preliminary and yet important findings on how service robot anthropomorphism most likely is positively associated with consumer usage intention, i.e. the positively influence mechanism of service robot anthropomorphism on consumer usage intention. Originality/value This research provides preliminary and yet important findings on how service robot anthropomorphism most likely is positively associated with consumer usage intention, i.e. the positively influence mechanism of service robot anthropomorphism on consumer usage intention. https://lnkd.in/g4Mg9d-u
