Today, I was privileged to attend an insightful round table in Brussels focused on the future of AI governance across the European Union. Hosted by the European Policy Centre (EPC), the event, titled "Past the AI Act: Time for a more collaborative approach across the EU?" brought together various stakeholders to explore collaborative paths forward. 🌍🤝 As a representative of the Vodafone Institute, I was part of the diverse gathering that engaged in thoughtful discussions about our collective approach to AI within the EU. 📡💼 The importance of unity and shared understanding in the face of technological advancement was a recurring theme. The discussions served as a reminder of the ongoing need for dialogue and cooperation.🚀🌱 Standing before the Berlaymont building, the headquarters of the European Commission, I was struck by the symbolism of it. It represents not just the administrative heart of the EU but also our collective effort towards ensuring technology serves to enhance human values and potential. 🏛️📸 This event underscored the continuous journey of collaboration and innovation within the realm of AI governance. It's clear that open dialogue and shared efforts are crucial as we navigate this evolving landscape together. 🌟💪 #AI #EU #Governance #Innovation #Technology #FutureIsNow #VodafoneInstitute

Independent consultant | Helping organisations shape political and policy conversations through campaigns & storytelling
Some thoughts on AI safety, following the conclusion of the AI Seoul Summit. The Appraise Network spoke to nine AI experts. My take-away, in a nutshell, was this: If your campaign wants to discuss policy, it’s public affairs. If your campaign wants to challenge the frame of reference or narrative, it’s advocacy. Both approaches are valid. But you can’t fix a framing issue with a policy campaign, you have to change the narrative. #AI #AIsafety #AIpolicy #AIadvocacy
As the AI Seoul Summit draws to a close, what conclusions can we draw - and what can we hope for from the next summits? The summit, jointly hosted by South Korea and the UK, was the second of its kind following the first one in Bletchley Park last year. Ahead of it, we spoke to nine AI experts from Parliament, business, academia, civil society and media to set some ambitions for the future of #AIsafety. Our main take-away was that the conversations around AI safety are happening on two different planes: 🧑🏻🔧 There is a technical conversation about policy and regulatory levers taking place. 🧙🏼♂️ In parallel, there is a philosophical conversation about our relationship with technology and companies. Our experience as policy communications specialists tells us that you can’t offer a policy solution to a philosophical question, and vice versa. Constructive policy debates require three things: 1️⃣ Trust and good will. 2️⃣ All stakeholders need to feel heard. 3️⃣ A common frame of reference. If you don’t have all three components, conversations break down, and inertia settles in. To unlock the policy debate, we will need a conversation which incorporates mechanisms to genuinely listen to the multitude of stakeholders who will be affected. And we will need to cultivate trust and good will, in order to define a common frame of reference. Yes, we will inevitably talk policy and regulation. By necessity, we’re having to build the plane as it flies. The top companies’ commitment to safety standards is a decent start. But the AI summits also give us an opportunity to have more fundamental conversations about how we want to live as a society. Let’s not waste it. Putting the forthcoming election aside for one minute, The Appraise Network has some new research. AI is set to be one of the dominant technologies of the future. It will reach into all aspects of the economy and society. However, policymakers, and the media, are only scratching the surface of the ethical and societal impact AI may bring. If we want to ensure the technology benefits all, we need to have a broader and deeper conversation. We need to better understand what we want from the technology and how we mitigate its drawbacks. Through our new report, we identify the pressure points policymakers will need grapple with to navigate a path to the future we want. Read more below and link to report in comments.

Author | Advisor | Social/Digital Media Storyteller | Keynote Speaker | Named Top 50 Women in Tech & Top 50 Unstoppable Women Leaders
There has been a significant rise in the APAC region, with scams accounting for 54 percent of all reported cases. This represents a remarkable 200 percent surge in voice scams compared to the previous year, underscoring the increasing complexity of digital risks. It was no surprise when the MWC, Mobile World Congress Shanghai this year started with a strong emphasis on artificial intelligence (AI), its disruptive capabilities, and tackling the widespread digital security issues. At the event, China's top tech giants presented their latest innovations, introducing products and visions to guide the industry toward a future powered by artificial intelligence. For quite some time now, I have been discussing the increasing presence and risks associated with AI with other tech leaders. It was a positive experience to witness this topic being discussed at MWC Shanghai, as we must acknowledge these dangers and learn how to safeguard ourselves. ➡ In discussing the impact of AI on industries, Lara Dewar, Chief Marketing Officer at GSMA, emphasized how AI has evolved from providing background support to leading the way in transformative technologies. This change signifies a new era where AI not only improves operational efficiency but also transforms the way technology is utilized by businesses and individuals. ➡ As AI progresses, its influence on innovation in various sectors will expand, creating fresh prospects and obstacles in the worldwide business landscape. Let's keep exploring how technology and innovation can enhance society's efficiency, productivity, and safety. #innovation #MWC24 #technology #AI Felipe Leal, Stiven Hr. Global AI Summit: South Korea And UK co-host 2nd Worldwide AI Summit in Seoul 🌎🧠 The United Kingdom and South Korea are set to co-host the second global AI summit in Seoul this week, focusing on AI safety, innovation, and inclusivity amidst rapid technological advancements since the first summit in November. The event, beginning with a virtual summit on Tuesday chaired by UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, will call for stronger AI regulation despite differing views on the technology's impact. Ministers from both countries will lead the in-person meeting on Wednesday. The summit underscores growing concerns about AI's risks, including labor market impacts, AI-enabled attacks, and loss of control over general-purpose AI, as highlighted in a recent global AI safety report. The summit follows the UK's November event, where notable figures like Elon Musk and Sam Altman engaged in discussions, leading to the "Bletchley Declaration" on AI risk management.
