Veteran Housing Corp reminds you that #HOMELESSNESS IS THE RESULT OF DECADES OF THE FAILURE TO BUILD AFFORDABLE HOUSING FOR ALL. THE HISTORY AND PRESENT STATE OF THE AFFORDABLE HOUSING INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX IN AMERICA CAN BE SUMMED UP IN ONE WORD: BROKEN DON'T BE FOOLED BY SLICK PROMOTIONAL POSTS THAT MAKE IT SEEM LIKE YOUR LOCAL, STATE OR FEDERAL GOVERNMENT ELECTED AND APPOINTED OFFICIALS ARE SOLVING THE AFFORDABLE HOUSING CRISIS. WHEN IT COMES TO AFFORDABLE HOUSING, THE PUBLIC AND TAXPAYERS MUST ASK: AT WHAT COST TO THE TAXPAYERS AND HOW LONG IS THE AFFORDABILITY PERIOD? EVERY TAXPAYER SHOULD BE ASKING THEIR ELECTED AND APPOINTED OFFICIALS THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS: 1. How much local, state, and federal funding, tax credits, density bonus increase, waivers of impact fees, or other government benefit or incentive did the project receive? 2. What is the affordability period for each project and, if the affordability period is not in perpetuity or permanent, WHY NOT? 3. What guarantees exist that tenants in the affordable housing units will not be displaced after an "affordability period expires? Any LOCAL, STATE or FEDERAL official that does not MANDATE "permanent" affordability periods or affordability "IN PERPETUITY" for any project receiving some government benefit is commiting MALFEASANCE and should quit, be removed from office or be terminated. IN MOST CASES WHEN IT COMES TO AFFORDABLE HOUSING, the public and taxpayer are being fooled into thinking their elected and appointed officials are solving problems, when in fact, all hey have done is "KICK THE CAN DOWN THE ROAD" to burden a future generation with the same problem or crisis!
Today, Funders Together filed an amicus brief with our partners at National Alliance to End Homelessness and Enterprise Community Partners for the Johnson v. Grants Pass case to urge #SCOTUS to protect the lives and rights of our unhoused neighbors across the country. “As institutions that invest and support proven solutions to homelessness and housing instability, philanthropy has a responsibility to also utilize its voice to protect our unhoused neighbors’ rights and lives,” said Amanda Andere, CEO of Funders Together to End Homelessness. “This brief emphasizes our organization’s and member’s unapologetic support for solutions that are rooted in humanity, choice, and the understanding that everyone deserves a safe place to call home." https://lnkd.in/gztVPRBY

The growth in encampments across the country is largely attributed to poverty, the acute shortage of affordable housing, lack of available shelter beds, and insufficient safety-net resources to prevent and end homelessness. Today, thanks to Governor Newsom, California announced a third of funding totaling $81 million to 12 communities to assist and connect people living in encampments to housing and supports. Congrats to these communities for leading local encampment resolution efforts that are person-centered and focused on creating pathways to safe, stable housing with supports. https://lnkd.in/dU5EYrKq

💡🏡 Communities are making progress by working differently. They define success by whether homelessness across their entire geography is being reduced, not whether individual programs are performing well. Local nonprofit and government agency staff work as a team toward the single goal of reducing homelessness. They know — by name and in real time — all those experiencing homelessness. This clear, comprehensive view allows them to see quickly what policies and investments are leading to success and to focus on what works. #HomelessnessIsSolvable Learn more: https://bit.ly/3WD6gSc.

A good read on the statistics for financing and developing more affordable housing. >> “Last month, the Pew Charitable Trusts became the latest in a long line of analysts to point out that research conclusively shows that homelessness is driven by housing costs, far more than any other factors such as mental health and substance use disorders.” << Nationwide, 44% of persons experiencing homelessness are working, so they are earning income, paying taxes, yet they are unhoused because housing costs far exceed wages / wage increases. See ideas worth spreading on how to finance housing to end homelessness. >> https://lnkd.in/gxJaKacC <<

This article has heart breaking statistics of families with children who face eviction. Many may think people who can't pay their rent have made poor financial choices - the fact is, that many single family homes in today's economy face critical choices. Should I feed my family OR pay rent late, should I pay for my child to go to the doctor or get behind on rent, Should I pay to get my car fixed so I can go to work or pay rent? At HOPE we help these families. We work hard to raise funds needed to prevent homelessness, to keep families fed, provide services to help with the issues they face at no fault of their own. I encourage you today, be part of the difference. Invest in these services that our Atlanta neighbors need. Do so, by giving to HOPE. HopeAtlanta.org. BY CORIE BROWN | Los Angeles Times Earlier this fall, the chief executives of several local foundations gathered at the Southern California Grantmakers offices to discuss expanding their efforts to combat L.A.’s growing homelessness crisis. The featured speakers were Peter Laugharn, president and CEO of the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, and Elise Buik, president and CEO of United Way of Greater Los Angeles, both fervent believers that homelessness in L.A. can be, “rare, brief and nonrecurring” — a catchphrase among philanthropists deeply involved in housing issues. The attendees, many of whom had to stand shoulder to shoulder along the walls in the too-small room, stayed for the entire 90-minute meeting. Wealthy L.A. philanthropists loosen grip on donations, shifting money toward social justice. “It’s easy to be overwhelmed by the scale of the housing problem in L.A.,” says Scott Koch, executive director of Reissa Foundation, a $65-million Santa Monica-based family foundation dedicated to improving the lives of vulnerable populations. But it “fuels my optimism,” he says, to hear what’s happening on the ground to solve homelessness. Koch sees an “openness” to providing less traditional support, such as construction loan guarantees and direct investments in affordable housing. “The city wasn’t looking at this as an emergency,” said Bass. “We are now.” read the full article on LA Times Together, We Can House Hope: Be a part of the solution.
