Paying obeisance to Adam Smith is almost deemed a rite of passage in the realm of global capitalism. Serving (even if only performatively) as a church militant of the cult of AS is actually considered a virtue in most corporate circles. Many develop ideological blind spots along the way and often unselfconsciously ascribe to a worldview that could only be described as free market fundamentalism. All this is fair-game though as the ideological consensus, they say, was set in 1992 when Francis Fukuyama declared that the end of history was upon us. Generative AI / LLMs now look to ‘blitzscale’ this ongoing journey to the efficient frontier, and we can only revel in the firm belief that the party’s just getting started. As with any other pop cultural facet, the global marketplace of ideas is ripe with polemical takes on how significant ChatGPT would prove to be in the long arc of history. The current Overton Window only allows the debate to focus on whether we humans are riding a tiger that we eventually can’t control. You’d either be anticipating doomsday scenarios or human compatible AI, depending upon whether you’re listening to Eliezer Yudkowsky or Stuart Russell, respectively. What gets conveniently hidden under the rug is a much more fundamental question – is the current normative reading of AI-linked services precluding a discussion on the labour market implications of wider AI adoption? In this vein, folks like Prof Anupam Guha help address several glaring lacunae in the present discourse by re-pivoting the lens on the political economy of AI. Anupam Guha, Assistant Professor at IIT Bombay, and the Founder of the Kosambi Reading and Analysis Circle, joins us in the latest episode of The Coffee House Experience to discuss the public policy implications of regulating AI. Do tune in for this masterclass! :) #artificialintelliegence #chatgpt #policyresearch #labour
