High-Efficiency Vacuum Degassing with the Superior S600 The Superior S600 offers two methods for removing gases from heating, cooling, or process water systems: 1. Passive Degassing: Dissolved gases are naturally released using the system's inherent temperature and pressure differences. With a Spirovent coalescing air separator, these gases are extracted from the liquid at the point of lowest solubility (lowest pressure/highest temperature). 2. Active Degassing (Vacuum Degassing: By creating a pressure change, a portion of the system fluid is temporarily placed in a vacuum state, releasing, separating, and removing dissolved gases. This treated fluid then reabsorbs air from the system for subsequent removal. When Does Vacuum Degassing Make Sense? - When an inline air separator cannot be installed at the desired location or is only too expensive. - In systems with many branches and partially low flow rates, where free collected air may not be carried to the air separator. - To eliminate air from make-up water before introducing it into the system. - In systems with significant elevation differences (e.g., multi-story buildings). Ever wonder why stalled fans can tear themselves apart? Here's a real-world insight into the phenomenon of fan surge and stalling - A few years ago, a 60-inch plenum fan in a pharmaceutical building in Puerto Rico tore itself apart overnight. Why? The fan continued to operate against closed dampers, a situation known as "dead heading," leading to severe mechanical stress and eventual failure. Fan blades stall individually, creating a microclimate of pressure fluctuations. This can cause the entire system to "rock and roll," with air output varying dramatically from one side to another. Such conditions not only strain the system but can lead to catastrophic failure when least expected – often overnight when no one is around to notice! Ready to optimize your HVAC system's performance by mastering your cooling coil's condensate GPM? Here's an example of calculating a cooling coil's condensate flow rate in gallons per minute, specifically at 1,000 cfm. For this lesson, let's assume you have an air-handling unit with the following conditions: Airflow = 1,000 cfm - Coil EAT = 95F db / 78F wb - Coil LAT = 50F db / 49.5F wb How much condensate is this cooling coil producing in gallons per minute? Here is the solution: First, determine the grains per pound of dry air for each condition. You can use your psychrometric chart or a psychrometric calculator to do this. - EAT = 117.4 grains/lb of dry air - LAT = 51.6 grains/lb of dry air Second, calculate how many grains have been removed. 117.4 - 51.6 = 65.74 grains/lb of dry air Third, let's convert this to lbs per minute as follows. 65.74 grains/lb of dry air x (0.075 lb air / ft3) x (1,000 ft3/min) x (1 lb / 7000 grains) = 0.704 lb / min Since there are 8.34 lbs of water per gallon, we can now calculate the GPM. The condensate flow rate is 0.704 / 8.34 = 0.08 gallons per minute. Which is about 42.3 lbs/hr or 5 gallons/hr of cooling coil condensate flow rate.
