Please consider signing this open letter to keep the Local Authority Delivery (LAD) programme alive this winter. I'm very much in favour of long-term retrofit programmes that give installers and referral partners the clarity and certainty to invest time and money. But for LAD I want us to make an exception, as this scheme has enabled councils to support many thousands of on-gas households with sustainable energy efficiency improvements. Whilst it was rushed in as a way to help the industry get going again after Covid, it deserves to be kept around for a while longer to help alleviate the impending wave of unaffordable energy bills. Without it, councils will have one hand tied behind their backs when it comes to helping low income households. I hope the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero will consider speaking to their Treasury colleagues and committing the relatively small amount of £100m. With it we can keep homes warm and healthy this winter. #Retrofit #LAD #FuelPoverty

This is a positive, well overdue and a no-brainer for the UK government. This decision will benefit everyone aligned with seeing Britain securing an ongoing clean energy supply whilst lowering household energy bills for millions! 📈 The UK’s energy bills were £22bn higher over the past decade than they would have been if Conservative governments had not cut “green crap” climate policies. ✂️ In 2013, then-prime minister David Cameron was infamously reported to have asked colleagues to “get rid of the green crap”, referring to climate policies supporting better home insulation. Cameron's government later scrapped a “zero-carbon homes” standard for new-build homes, ended support for ☀️solar power and blocked the expansion of onshore wind. 📈 Carbon Brief’s analysis shows that the “green crap” rollbacks left UK billpayers more exposed to record gas prices during the energy crisis. The British public have spoken, they want a cleaner, cheaper, and more secure energy system, and they want it sooner rather than later. Ahead of the Autumn Statement on Wednesday, the Chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, has been sent a clear message from voters to get building new energy infrastructure to boost UK energy security. A new poll of over 6,000 British voters has shown that voters want to speed up the transition to a cleaner energy future to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels. It also suggests that voters support measures to increase investment and reduce the amount of time it takes to build new, clean homegrown power. The answer is clear, we need a government that supports and accelerates progress towards net zero. We have plans to invest £40bn in this infrastructure this decade if the policy environment and planning processes allow – and we want to get on with it. Really enjoyed attending the Business of Leading the #Energy Transition event on Wednesday sponsored by Aviva and several other corporate partners, with speeches from the Exchequer Secretary Gareth Davies MP, Shadow Climate and Energy Secretary Ed Miliband, CCC Chief Exec Chris Stark, National Infrastructure Commission Chair John Armitt, ex Env Agency Chair Emma Howard Boyd, and great corporate speakers. Some key takeaways: - The UK public debate on decarbonisation seems to have lost its way in recent months and government and businesses alike need to put more energy into explaining how the #netzero transition can be shaped in a way that benefits society and the economy: more and better public engagement is both urgent and vital to put the transition back on track. - The investment and supply chain opportunities to get to net zero are huge but we have about 12 years to decarbonise the full power grid. That's very little time in investment terms. It's time to "stop tinkering around the edges". - Any serious government attempt at putting the UK power sector and broader economy on track for net zero needs to tackle planning reforms, grid infrastructure construction delays, skill gaps and supply chain bottlenecks in areas like offshore wind and grid components. - Whilst more government strategies are needed, the near-term focus should be on accelerating infrastructure delivery (e.g., reviewing financial terms for offshore wind to support new projects) and cracking on with no / low regret investments (home energy efficiency insulation, heat pump roll out, hydrogen transport and storage infrastructure etc.). #climate
