Aspen Institute Community Strategies Group’s important new report, "Funding Rural Futures," asks what it will take for government and philanthropy to do better in supporting rural communities and Native Nations. "I think it’s both trust and a greater understanding of the dynamic terrain the grantee partners are working in," says Hive Fund co-director Melanie Allen, one of 40 practitioners interviewed for the project. "We need to see people working on the ground as strategists who are worthy and wholly capable of determining how resources are spent toward a specific goal.” Check out the report's four principles for doing grantmaking differently to improve outcomes. https://lnkd.in/evJ6mWbP

I appreciated this piece by Inside Philanthropy about the role of place-based funders in supporting rural areas. Kudos to The Ford Family Foundation, Roundhouse Foundation, and Humboldt Area Foundation for being recognized for their important work in my home state of Oregon. This passage in particular resonated with me: Place-based giving is obviously a hugely important part of rural philanthropy. Regional funders not only have a better understanding of the communities they serve, they're also frequently equipped to offer other types of support, such as providing technical support, trainings, and serving as conveners. For national funders interested in increasing — or setting out on — their grantmaking in rural America, one of the most effective ways to do so is by supporting the regional funders already backing their home communities.
We’ve been overviewing some of the many place-based funders that support rural areas in the U.S. to shine a light on regions often neglected by national philanthropy. Here are a few of the lessons we’ve learned along the way. https://buff.ly/45sSbaZ #ruralgrantmaking #grantsforruralcommunities

This article from the SSIR supplemental "The Future of Philanthropy is Trust Based" does a great job of summarizing a paradigm shift in how foundations and grantees see and implement accountability. The Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project believes that "accountability requires self-examination, humility, curiosity, and a willingness to change." Accountability for CTAOP means that there is "an agreed-upon process for both funders and grantee partners to be held responsible." Thus, trust based philanthropy is not about doing away with accountability (as some critics state), but about redefining and expanding what accountability is, for both grantees and foundations. https://lnkd.in/g__XDQz6

We're pleased to share our latest report, Funding Rural Futures: A Call to Action — how equitable, flexible grantmaking is vital to fostering community conditions that increase rural prosperity and well-being. Participants interviewed for this report universally expressed frustration with current grantmaking systems, which require an immense amount of time and energy that could be better spent on advancing the organizations' urgent missions. The most common recommendation was to adopt a trust-based approach centered on flexible, long-term funding. Despite a strong record of success, local organizations are especially frustrated by having to "re-prove" themselves to funders each time. By shifting policy and practice, funders can deploy more flexible investments that better meet the needs of organizations serving low-income and persistent poverty rural regions. Thanks to Partners for Rural Transformation for their partnership on this report. #Philanthropy #Grantmaking #Rural #RuralDevelopment https://lnkd.in/evJ6mWbP

We are so grateful to the North Star Fund for their unwavering support of social justice initiatives, particularly those led by communities of color striving to empower themselves in New York City and Hudson Valley. Their investment of grassroots organizing has had a profound impact on our community, specifically through their support of Unidad Comunal—an alliance comprising tenant associations, block associations, and community members committed to enhancing the quality of life in Washington Heights and Inwood. As a vital partner, Unidad Comunal receives invaluable organizational support from NMIC. Their commitment to grassroots organizing has made a profound impact on our community, specifically through their support of Unidad Comunal—an alliance of tenant associations, block associations, and neighbors dedicated to elevating the quality in Washington Heights and Inwood. As a crucial partner, Unidad Comunal receives invaluable organizing support from NMIC. Unidad Comunal is driven by the core tenets of "Unite, Educate, and Work." Our overarching goal is to transform New York into a place where low-income immigrants and residents no longer find themselves in perpetual struggles for access to quality housing, essential amenities, vital services, and fair wages. Our vision is to forge a city where these fundamental necessities are as accessible as they are for non-immigrant and more affluent communities. In partnership with North Star Fund, we are actively and purposefully advancing towards the realization of this vision of equity and justice. On our recent visit to New York’s North Country, we heard that delivering essential social services can be a major challenge due to the area’s vast geography and low population density, and that the nonprofit sector plays a critical role in addressing this issue. In today's article, the authors detail how nonprofits support low- and moderate-income communities in both small towns and larger municipalities across the North Country. https://nyfed.org/4fgkz5Y

At Outreach, we’re a community-led nonprofit. That means our work is driven by the people most affected by poverty-related issues. We believe that the people who live in conditions of poverty are the ones who are most qualified to identify their own unique problems. The methodology of community-led development shows people that they have the power to change their circumstances for the better. And when they learn to do this themselves, they become able to solve other issues in the future. We know that community-led development is the key to sustainable solutions to poverty. But you don’t have to take our word for it. Here are 10 Reasons from GlobalGiving!⬇️ https://lnkd.in/e4EWPHj2
