AI, 2 letters that generate fear or optimism for the future. AI is slowly making its way into healthcare in the UK and it has implications for our patients and our staff. In California, Nurses have been striking to raise awareness of the impact AI will have on clinicians and patients. They are also striking to encourage clinician involvement in AI design. These are all important considerations for AI deployment here in the UK.

This may end up being an interesting case study... Kaiser, like many health systems, is evaluating the potential for AI to improve care, clinical outcomes and the patient experience. But, it seems clear their plan for adoption failed to engage some of their most important caregivers--nurses. AI creates new opportunities to improve outcomes and add value. The pilot was about assisting clinicians while allowing them full control of the actual message, much like a partnership or getting input about the content from another colleague. Unfortunately, the headliner makes it seem like nurses don’t have time to respond to patient questions, which is not the point of the article. What value is this bringing the patient? If I perceive, as a patient, that my health messages (that I could now be charged for) are just going to a bot and AI is responding, why would I just not go to a different chatbot to get info? Careful headliner and value messaging to this important work is necessary for patient trust.

Those in my direct orbit know that I believe it is crucial that physicians and nurses be included in the selection and deployment of any AI tools slated for clinical environments. The fact that more than half, 60%, of nurses who responded to this survey say they don't trust their employer to consider patient safety as the most important factor when implementing AI tools, should sound alarm bells. In efforts to realize the benefits of AI – and there are many – it must be proven that it can be trusted. That will take time, but it begins with earning the trust of the very people who will use it. I have read several stories about the fears of AI in bedside patient care this week, and undoubtedly there consistent disconnect between the technology and the perception of what the technology is intended to do.
