📆 Yesterday (7/11), I had a 🕔 45-minute discussion with Ms. Ping-Tee Tan (MPH, RPh), Lead Specialist in Consumer Engagement and Education (CEE) at the Agency for Care Effectiveness (ACE), Ministry of Health, 🇸🇬 Singapore, together with Naman Kochar and Vaishali Yadav of Costello Medical. This meeting was to further clarify some 🗝 key questions regarding the HTA process in 🇸🇬 Singapore, including the timing and format of patient engagement, processes employed by HTA bodies, and tailored processes for patient involvement in special case appraisals. It is very interesting to note that HTA agencies have their own processes, and there may be more differences than similarities in how they operate. In my own observation, these are the things they have in common: 👉 They value patient engagement and input. 👉 They ensure that patients are included in the process. 👉 They reach out to patient organizations and the public. 👉 They exert extra effort in reaching out to patient organizations and the public. 👉 They provide feedback to patients. Last 📅 May 28, the World Health Organization, at the Seventy-seventh World Health Assembly, adopted the resolution "Social Participation for Universal Health Coverage, Health, and Well-being." This resolution should be put into action by different HTA agencies to ensure that patients have meaningful and active engagement throughout the entire HTA process. Capacity building is essential for patients to understand the complexity of the HTA process. This will lead to greater patient engagement and increased acceptability of HTA decisions. We are near the finish line of this research and hopefully we will be able to see what is implementable, what works, and what can be recommended. Valuable insights into the process quality of US #hospitals Impressive willingness to change and technological advancement During my participation at the HIMSS Global Health Conference & Exhibition, I was able to experience first-hand how hospitals in the USA use digital solutions and process optimization to improve the quality of care. I was particularly impressed by the willingness to actively embrace change and implement new technologies. Digital Health: Pragmatic approach and lived interprofessionalism The USA is characterized by a pragmatic approach to the introduction of Digital Health. Instead of theorizing for a long time, pilot projects are launched and the results are implemented in practice. The lived interprofessionalism, in which all professional groups work together on an equal footing, is also remarkable. Clean processes and consistent decision-making Another important factor for the high process quality in US hospitals is the focus on clean processes and consistent decision-making. Decisions are made on the basis of data and facts and are consistently implemented. Learning from the USA: Optimizing process quality in German hospitals The insights I gained have shown me that German hospitals can learn a lot from the practice in the USA. The following points are particularly relevant: 👉 Willingness to change: Actively shape the transformation process and not wait for political decisions. 👉 Use technology: Use digital solutions to optimize processes and improve the quality of care. 👉 Promote interprofessionalism: Ensure cooperation between all professional groups on an equal footing. 👉 Establish clean processes: Create clear structures and responsibilities. 👉 Make consistent decisions: Make decisions based on data and facts and implement them consistently. Personal reflection As Chair of #HIMSSDACH, I am convinced that HIMSS is an inspiring place that opens up new perspectives and promotes innovation. I recently attended the Prix Galien, celebrating great work in Life Sciences and Healthcare. Some observations from the day's second panel: Introducing New Technologies: Optimising pathways to improve population health Key takeaways include: Centres for Innovation: Focusing on specific therapies in specific places prevents duplication and maximizes effort. UK's Balancing Act: Navigating national standards alongside differentiated efforts within individual Integrated Care Boards (ICBs) remains a challenge. Ecosystem for Health Innovations: A high-functioning ecosystem, where all parties share interests and benefits, is crucial for thriving health innovations. Early Recognition of Innovation: Panellists emphasised the need for early identification of game-changing innovations, developing specific approaches and processes to ensure uptake and patient benefit. The UK’s Capped Medicine Budget: Seen as both a challenge and an opportunity, our capped budget makes it harder to get more expensive medicines to market, but drives the replacement of older treatments with newer, more effective options. Cost-Benefit Misalignment: The fact that cost and benefit don’t always show up in the same budget lines remains a fixable yet unresolved issue for NHS organisations. Workforce Impact: Both innovators and NHS management need to spend more time assessing the workforce impact of new technology to unlock its full benefits. Health Inequality: Despite broad availability, health inequalities persist, with lower referral and uptake rates in areas of highest inequality.
