So, watch the space! In every career there ups and downs, there are dull periods and then there are exciting ones. One could argue that launching a new strategy is a true highlight for a portfolio manager. Looking back at my nearly twenty years in the industry, I had the privilege to be involved in a few launches myself. Yet, I have never seen the degree of commitment and professionalism that was put forward when launching this new flagship strategy. Witnessing the unwavering trust and enthusiasm towards me and the investment proposition, was not only humbling, but also filled me with an immense degree of pride to be a part of such a great organisation. I know that this is a bit cheesy, but more than once did I find myself humming a song by a Scottish singer celebrating her home country, and it resembles so much to what I feel towards my new home AllianzGI: Well, the blue and the white of the flag shines bright And it's blowing there for me. With my hand on my heart, the honest truth There's nowhere I'd rather be. Launching a new strategy is a great undertaking, there were many colleagues involved in that project over the past few months. Great investment opportunity

Please help us say congratulations to Hazen Dickerson, CFA. On June 24th he celebrated his 4 year work anniversary here at Frontier. Hazen is diligent and engaging which makes him a great Investment Specialist. Congrats Hazen! We asked Hazen three questions: Q: What’s the biggest misconception people have about your position? A: That you know what’s going to happen with the stock market or specific stocks. At least a few times a year I’ll talk to someone who works in another field and when learn that I work in the investment industry they seem to think that I should just know what is going to happen with the prices of various stocks, markets, etc. Unfortunately that’s not quite how it works. There’s a lot of research and effort that goes into positioning an investment portfolio for a wide range of possible future outcomes, all of which are uncertain to us at present, and at the end of the day what happens in the market(s) it outside of our control.   Q: What do you do to turn things around when you’re having a bad day? A: My faith helps me to refocus on what’s most important in my life, and helps put things in proper perspective, which makes whatever trials I might be encountering that day seem a little less daunting.   Q: Do you have any hidden talents? A: I have a pretty good memory and can recall lots of movie lines, quotes, and random stuff like land-line phone numbers that I haven’t used in 10+ years, etc. I’m also pretty good at impersonations, especially Forrest Gump, Hank Hill, & Gollum.

I came across some interesting insights lately that got me thinking about the age-old debate of property investment versus stock market investing, especially when it comes to the early stages of one's career. 🤔 According to financial influencers and even the latest edition of Value Research Magazine (November 2023), some top officials in major asset management companies are expressing their regrets about investing in properties early on, suggesting it can become a burden. They believe that focusing on the market might have been a wiser choice. Now, I'm curious to hear your thoughts and experiences on this matter! What's your hindsight perspective on these two investment paths? 🏠 Property Investment: Pros: tangible asset, potential for rental income, a sense of security. Cons: high initial costs, maintenance, and less liquidity. 💹 Stock Market Investment: Pros: liquidity, diversification, growth potential. Cons: volatility, market risks, and the emotional rollercoaster. So, my questions to you are: Do you think property investment can be a burden in the early stages of one's career? Was investing in the stock market a smarter choice for you personally? What factors influenced your decision to lean toward one or the other? More than a platform for professionals, I feel LinkedIn is a great platform for knowledge-seeking from experts in their respective fields. So I thought of throwing this question out so that not only me but a lot of people who are starting early in investment can benefit. Good client dialogues on how to best go about making direct investment in the unlisted market!

😳The most difficult investment decisions for me have always been about closing loss making positions. I would look at them and still hold the hope of a recovery. Most often I would have also invested based on my research and had the tendency to be defensive about this. But with time, both cause of experience (some of which 😖) and cross functional specialisation, I understood that discipline plays a key role. What I found to work is: 1. Establish from inception what would have to happen to close the position (sometimes it's a key assumption turning bad, other times I set a max loss etc) 2. Take stock apriori of my key assumptions for investing in that security. When losses happen (in excess of my comfort zone), I look at how those assumptions look like at that moment 3. I ask myself what would have to happen for the performance to turn arround Sometimes this time of reflection does lead me to other questions to consider. However, overall this discipline has completely changed the way I feel when I need to take a decision like this. It helps me step away from the challenge and look at it with added objectivity.
