A recent passion of mine is film photography. The process of loading, winding, focusing, adjusting shutter speed and aperture, and finally taking an exposure induces a meditative, trance-like state. Photography itself is a curious creative medium, as it is, at its core, a three-way interaction between photographer, subject, and viewer. When I am out taking photos, I find that time moves slower, my breathing becomes more controlled, and I become vividly aware of the space that surrounds me. It is almost a spiritual experience. I particularly like this photograph I took on my 1971 Canon FTb of a dancing street performer at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe earlier this year. As I continue to mature and develop, the importance of creative expression grows even more apparent. We are creative beings. Whether it is prose, poetry, photography, music, dance, cinema, fine arts, or any of the countless other creative mediums, art is key to how we make sense of the world around us. Art excludes no one; we all can engage in valid artistic expression, and we all possess the coveted ability to create. Nor do we necessarily need to be actively 'creating' in order to benefit from artistic expression. Engaging with art produced by others - through reading, listening to music, or attending a performance, for example - is equally good for the soul.
