HHLA Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG’s Post

Today we reached a major milestone toward decarbonising logistics 🚀 We have opened the first test field for hydrogen-powered port operations and a corresponding hydrogen refuelling station at our Container Terminal Tollerort in Hamburg. In collaboration with partners from our Clean Port & Logistics cluster, we are testing the reliability of hydrogen for heavy goods vehicles during operations. Equipment like straddle carriers, empty container stackers, forklift trucks, reach stackers, tractor units, and trucks can now be efficiently filled with green hydrogen at 350 bar. The refuelling station is open to the public, offering other companies the chance to test climate-friendly transport solutions. 🌱💚 Since 2022, we have been collaborating with over 40 partner companies worldwide to develop market-ready hydrogen-powered vehicles and equipment. The concepts for operation, safety, maintenance, refuelling, and supply are now tested and optimised at the test field. #HHLA #logistics #hydrogen #innovation

I’m proud to have been a part of this groundbreaking project with HHLA. This achievement wouldn’t have been possible without the tireless efforts of our team, our colleagues at Container Terminal Tollerort, and the invaluable expertise from our partners. A special thanks to our extensive network for their unwavering support. Together, we will collect data, create know-how, and set new standards in sustainable logistics. Excited for what’s to come as we continue to innovate and lead the way in green port operations.

From the first planning sketches, through the approval planning to the completion of the construction, it was an exciting and extraordinary project that was only possible through great teamwork. I would like to take this opportunity to thank KMT Architekten + Ingenieure, Linde Hydrogen FuelTech in Vienna and Munich, Hanstein Sand and especially to my colleagues at CTT Terminal Tollerort and HHLA Technical Departement for their great support to make the idea become reality.

Congratulations! The opening of the hydrogen refuelling station in Hamburg's port marks a significant step towards sustainable port logistics, demonstrating that innovation and environmental awareness can go hand in hand. Despite the funding cuts affecting many hydrogen projects, this station remains a beacon of hope and proof of Hamburg's commitment to the hydrogen economy. Let us hope that Berlin and Brussels recognise the need for stable financing and take action, ensuring that Hamburg's pioneering role is not just a chapter in an unfinished book.

Great success 👏🏻 Congrats!
