Actions speak louder than words...
Now is the time for change ! Now is the time for our Elders, those with lived experience and our young people to be listened to ! Now is the time to close the gap ! Now is the time to stop doing what research and the many reports continue to clearly demonstrate what does not work in our justice system and continues to cost more and more money each year and listen to our Elders and Leaders who have the answers ! The Myalup initiative has been 8 years in the planning, from the time Western Australia was selected as the location for the first national prototype, the selection of the site by the Elders, through to the planning by the national codesign team of the site layout, buildings, facilities, and program design. This has involved 36 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people engaged in the justice system and 28 Aboriginal Elders and leaders from across Australia codesigning the whole initiative. The codesign principles have ensured that the program, the whole site layout and every building design is integrated into the environment where connection to the land and culture forms a foundational element of design for the healing process. The FISH Myalup Initiative is significant as it has been designed by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to provide a place where First Nations people aged 16-35 can heal and receive holistic support to break intergenerational cycles of trauma, avoid (re)engagement in the justice system and contribute positively to society. Last week the FISH National Codesign Team came together again to continue to add more detail to the program and to the architectural drawings as we begin the process to move to Building Licences now the whole 11 hectare site has received full Development Approval by the State Government of Western Australia. Now is the time for change ! The question is will the State Government and the Australian Government listen to our Elders, Leaders, those with lived experience and our young people and be willing to walk shoulder to shoulder with them to bring healing and break the cycle of intergenerational engagement in the justice system for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people through the full implementation of the FISH Myalup Karla Waangkiny Healing & Justice Initiative. Not only is this about justice and creating a safe and secure community where all people are valued and able to positively contribute to their community but it makes economic sense ! Walk with us on this journey. #partnerships #togetherwecandomore #togetherwearebetter #workingtogether #Alternativetoprison #justicereinvestment #justice #codesign #communityled #togetherwearestronger #wellbeing #healing #structuralreform #leadership #bythepeopleforthepeople #justicereform #realdifference #togetherwecandomore #workingtogether #indigenousdesign #collaboration

Opinion: Don’t destroy historic Bay Area neighborhoods to solve housing crisis In recent years, historic preservation has come under intense fire from state Sen. Scott Wiener and his YIMBY allies for allegedly interfering with housing production. However, the regional housing crisis can be solved without destroying historic neighborhoods. After coming of age in the late 1960s, preservation focused on properties associated with the nation’s elite. However, this has changed as the scope of what society thinks deserves protection has broadened. For example, did you know that San Francisco’s Tenderloin is the city’s largest historic district? Without historic preservation, we would have no Palace of Fine Arts, no Alamo Square, no Tonga Room, no Alcatraz and no Paramount Theater. The list goes on and on. Veteran Housing Corp applauds all efforts to build affordable housing but would challenge the US Congress and every local, state, and federal housing agency or affordable housing developer to do better in 2024 and beyond. Veteran Housing Corp demands permanent affordability for all projects receiving government funding, subsidies, tax credits, or other incentives! Veteran Housing Corp demands transparency and every local, state, and federal government agency and other stakeholders MUST provide answers to questions about the housing projects that are built with government funding, subsidies, tax credits, or incentives, including the following: 1. How much funding, federal tax credits, or government benefits or incentives from all government sources did the projects receive? 2. What is the affordability period for each project? 3. What guarantees exist that tenants will not be displaced after the "affordability period expires? Every local, state, and federal housing authority and affordable or workforce housing stakeholder should adopt the State of Vermont's "permanent affordability" policy as a model for all future government funded or subsidized housing projects or developments, no exceptions! https://lnkd.in/eFEUC8c8 Additionally, local, state and federal housing agencies should look to the Helsinki, FINLAND MODEL of ending homelessness by providing affordable housing for all 'It’s a miracle': Helsinki's radical solution to homelessness https://lnkd.in/er9HZSQU U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development AGREES THAT adopting FINLAND'S MODEL OF ERADICATING HOMELESSNESS may be of great value to resolving the affordable housing and homelessness crises in America https://lnkd.in/gkSZWYRU
2024 is off to a fantastic start for the HUD Office of Community Planning and Development. We put out a proposed rule to update CDBG - our signature program, which is turning 50 this year - and heard some good preliminary feedback at the US Conference of Mayors. Highlights include making it easier to do economic development and bricks and mortar construction. Please comment by March 11th. Link in comments. After a natural disaster, what is the role of the private sector in shoring up the Arts? DMC director Dr. Sam Staley weighs in on the aftermath of an unprecedented storm that spun off three devastating tornadoes in Tallahassee. In this op-ed, Dr. Staley questions if it is wise that public resources are devoted to rebuilding a market best left to private industry. The aesthetic and uniqueness of Railroad Square would be disrupted by the bureaucracy required with public interference, and the last thing the beloved arts district needs after being so damaged by the storm is for its artistic character to lose the private, individual touch. Read more on Dr. Staley’s thoughts here: https://lnkd.in/eMjEUmwn #dmcfsu #fsu #florida #floridastate #floridastateuniversity #research #policy #publicpolicy #thinktank #naturaldisaster #RailroadSquare #public #funding #publicfunding #private #privateinvestment #privatefunding #arts #creativity #industry #community
