We take human eye resolution for granted and don't often realize how our surroundings have been carefully optimized for that resolution - especially work and training environments. After paying attention to this, I now claim that video pass-through resolution is even more important than VR resolution in XR. Going the last mile in video pass-through resolution is not easy though, so we had to break out the big guns: variable-focus cameras. Once you see the sharpness of variable-focus pass-through cameras in action you can't help but think this is how XR video pass-through should always have been. The real trick in making this work is your focusing system. Due to the nature of human eyes - specifically the gap effect during saccades - you have a tiny time window to adjust camera focusing such that it goes unnoticed by the brain. We manage to stay within this window and the end result feels a little magical: When replaying a recording (like below) you can certainly see parts of the image being out-of-focus, but during live usage whatever you're really looking at is in-focus. Everything appears as if you had supernatural pass-through cameras that are in-focus everywhere at once! Varjo #mixedreality
