I lasted 4 months in fashion PR. 😮 Here's why 👇🏼👇🏼 Bella Webb posted an article "Debunking the dream: Is working in fashion going out of style?" (Link in comments to article) and it got me thinking about the many demanding industries that can leave people burned out and finding ways to beat the system and stay in the game. 🏓 How do you survive in a demanding industry that you (think) you love? 🌟 Find your niche skill set that aligns with your passion. POV: You got hired for a SMM position and it's not flowing for you but you love digital and content. Pivot -- get into UX design, Ecomm or digital marketing where social media is in the mix but not the main sauce. 🌟 Find a mentor Someone who aligns with your values and ambitions. Think about it like career therapy -- where you hire a professional to talk about your goals and how to get there! 🌟 Connect with people who have the job you (think) you want You can learn so much by following , shadowing and asking questions of people already doing what YOU (think) you want to do. ^This how I figured out fashion PR wasn't for me. Although it was an unpaid 4 month internship, I got to see people at the VP level and also experience the very not-so-glamorous sides of fashion (which the VP's still dealt with) --- you couldn't pay me enough for their job (but I'd hire THEM!). That's MY journey. 🛣 Now I work in brand experience and retail design -- I get to be creative, use my hands, and put my OCD to use in organizational spreadsheets and managing teams. Before you leave an industry, test out different roles! Over the past month, my team and I have been on a mission: Finding the perfect backup graphic designer and social media intern to join us when my incredible Graphic Designer/Social Manager goes on Maternity Leave this summer. Junior motion designers are lost. Remote work is great, but junior designers have told us they have trouble learning and getting mentorship. So what did we do about it? We created the Fly on the Wall program. Fly on the Wall invites talent to join us on motion design projects and observe. This allows us to include and educate more people than a traditional internship. The Motion Flies sign an NDA, and then join our slack channels, client Zoom calls and Milanote boards. They truly see projects come together from beginning to end.
