Rice hulls are the hard protective coverings of grains of rice that are removed during the milling process. On the farm, we use rice hulls for: 1. Improving soil drainage, moisture-holding capacity, and aeration when mixed with garden soil or potting mixes. 2. Providing nitrogen, silica, and organic matter to the soil as they decompose. 3. Planting crops. 4. Enhancing plant resistance to drought, frost, pests, and diseases due to their high silica content. 5. Serving as a mulch to prevent weed growth and soil erosion. 6. Producing biochar, a charcoal-like substance that rice hulls turn to after it has been burned, which can improve soil fertility and sequester carbon. We mostly fill our troughs with biochar instead of rice hulls due to its benefits. #jumokethompson

Blossom end rot is a common garden physiological disorder caused by a lack of calcium within the plant. 1) What causes Tomato Blossom End Rot? • fluctuations in soil moisture (too wet or too dry) • an excess of nitrogen (N) in the soil • root damage due to cultivation •excessively cold soil chemical treatment:- Calcium chloride sprays applied to the foliage may help prevent blossom-end rot on developing fruit. #farmerfirst #tomato #agriculturelife #vegetables #seeds

Frequently Asked Question - Why are worms so important? Worms play a vital role in soil health and plant growth. They help in the following ways: 🪱 Improving nutrient availability: Worms break down organic matter, releasing essential nutrients and microbes into the soil. This makes the nutrition more accessible to plants for growth and development. 🪱 Improving drainage: As worms burrow through the soil, they create channels that facilitate better water penetration, reducing the risk of waterlogging. This is crucial for healthy root growth. 🪱 Improving soil structure: The burrowing and feeding activities of worms help to aerate and loosen the soil. This promotes better root penetration and enhances overall soil structure, resulting in improved plant growth. 🪱 Improving productivity: With enhanced nutrient availability, improved drainage, and better soil structure, the presence of worms in the soil leads to increased productivity and yields in gardens and agricultural fields. #worms #vermiculture #wormpoop #organicgardening #SoilHealth #OrganicFarming #livingsoil #organicfertiliser #wormhit

As winter's chill settles in, we can be caught with less pasture growth than we would like. It's this time that the groundwork for vibrant growth above ground begins below the surface. NutriSoil Worm Castings and Biological Liquid are a complete and balanced food source for your plants and soil, closely mimicking nature's own processes. As winter approaches, broadcast worm castings onto the soil. The castings will sit and absorb nutrients from the atmosphere. Once the rain arrives, these castings will wash back down into the soil, naturally providing a nutrient-rich "worm extract" without the need for manual extraction. Once the pastures grow apply NutriSoil Biological Liquid to the leaf area to further enhance growth, nutrient quality and build plant and soil resilience. #sustainablefarming #regenerativefarming #soilhealth #pasture #mimicnature

What are you looking for? Many factors go into a successful farm or ranch. One of the most important is observation. Walking your fields and looking for anything abnormal is a good way to spot problems before they become bad enough to hurt your crop. Magnesium is a quiet deficiency. If you can see symptoms in the leaves you’ve already lost your optimum yield potential. Before you see any above-ground plant nutrient deficiency symptoms you need to pull a few plants and look at the root structure. Plants absorb Mg primarily through their roots and when the root structure is diminished so is the plant’s ability to come into contact with needed nutrients. Most Mg makes it into the plant through mass flow, the movement of Mg2+ (the ionic form most plant-available) through the soil, past plant roots, and dissolved in soil water. The plant takes up needed water (because of respiration) and the dissolved Mg is absorbed at the same time. If we’re in a drought year this system isn’t very efficient. There has to be enough water in the soil. To learn more about magnesium deficiency and its effects to your crops contact us at https://lnkd.in/g2JFUw4E #magnesiumdeficiency #soilwater #massflow
