Learning is a life-long adventure that enriches the mind and nourishes the soul. Embrace the journey of learning, for it is the key to unlocking your true potential. My transition from theoretical knowledge to practical applications was not an easy one. Granted, my exposure to Farm practicals started right from my first year in the University but it was not until I got to my Final Year that I had the hands-on experience in conducting a research work. It was a 'do-it-yourself-with-minimal-supervision’ experience and it was really challenging. My experience ranged from fatigue (from raising one hundred and fifty broiler chickens from day old to maturity), to having to put to use all that I had previously learnt in class, to combining lectures and research work, to writing my project, all at once. I was able to learn diligence, resilience, hands-on application of knowledge, data collection and analysis, report writing as well as animal handling. Thankfully, my experience did ignite the passion in me to pursue a second degree in Animal Physiology. I have also been able to spread the passion as I have faithfully converted countless people (neighbours, church members, colleagues and friends) into into becoming poultry farmers (at the least, backyard farming) helping them to establish and providing free consultations. I didn't realise how much impact I had made until my Pastor said, during service one Sunday, that I had converted nearly all our church members into poultry farmers. Welcome to our Living Lab – PEI #ParticipantProfile Series! 👏👀 First up, we have Catherine Pal, an Animal Handling Research Technician on the Beef and Forages Research Team at the Nappan Research Farm! 🐮 1. Introduce yourself My name is Catherine Pal, and I am an Animal Handling Research Technician on the Beef and Forages Research Team at Nappan Research Farm! We have been involved in a lot of really interesting research since I started with John Duynisveld (AAFC Biologist) in 2015. My responsibilities are pretty broad here, which is something that I enjoy about this job; I would never describe this job as boring! John involves me in almost all project related activities, from initial project planning meetings, to work planning and execution of the day-to-day tasks involved in project set up, data collection, lab analysis, statistical analysis interpretation to summary preps for reporting. I also attend workshops and field days to chat with people and hear about their challenges and successes. A lot of our research is related to the Living Lab – PEI BMP 1: Livestock Feeding Strategies. We are currently entering the seventh year of a managed grazing study, we help out with the Living Lab – New Brunswick community pasture managed grazing project, and we've just recently wrapped up a really neat project involving feeding PEI sourced kelp to pregnant beef heifers and then measuring the impact on their methane emissions. 2. What do you like most about being part of a living lab? I like being a part of something that really matters; healthy food for the growing population matters and farmers and their families matter. The things that we discover through our studies here matters to farmers. I think that everyone wants to have a job that they know is helpful and important and can help someone to make a good management decision for their business. I like knowing that we are working on things that can give farmers more information which could help them make decisions for their farm management with less risk to themselves than if we weren't here testing problems and potential solutions.
